# An AI support chat costs US$0.49 to US$2.00: five price lists, compared

*What Freshworks, HubSpot, Intercom, Zendesk and Salesforce charge per AI-handled customer conversation, and what WhatsApp adds, as of September 2026.*

Five customer-service vendors now print what one AI-handled conversation costs, and the range runs from US$0.49 to US$2.00 before GST.[1] [2] [4] [5] [8] When this blog first asked the question in 2021, the argument was that an e-commerce business should put a learning “smart bot” in front of its customers and keep a human behind it for what the bot could not answer. That argument is won: every major help desk now sells exactly that. The question in September 2026 is what the meter counts, because the headline prices are not measuring the same thing.

## Billed for a resolution, or billed for an attempt

Intercom charges US$0.99 per Fin “outcome”, with a minimum of 50 a month when Fin runs on another help desk; only one outcome is billed per conversation, and a conversation passed to your team without one costs nothing.[1] HubSpot charges 50 credits per resolved conversation from 14 April 2026, which it prices at US$0.50, on top of a Professional or Enterprise seat. [8] Zendesk includes 5, 10 or 15 automated resolutions per agent a month by tier, capped at 10,000 a year, then charges US$2.00 for each one after that.[4] Freshdesk meters sessions instead: 500 are included once per account, then US$49 buys another 100, and a session is any unique interaction between a customer and the AI agent, resolved or not.[2] Salesforce launched Agentforce at US$2 per conversation in 2024 and has since added Flex Credits at US$500 per 100,000.[5]

TechBag countTechBag arithmetic

Take 10,000 customer chats a month and assume the AI resolves 6,000. On Intercom that is 6,000 outcomes at US$0.99, or US$5,940. On HubSpot it is US$3,000 plus the seats. On Freshdesk every one of the 10,000 is a session, so once the one-time 500 are spent the month costs US$4,900 whether or not they were resolved. On Zendesk, a ten-agent team on a ten-resolution tier pays for 5,900 resolutions at US$2.00: US$11,800. The assumptions are ours; the unit prices are the vendors’.

Our view

Our view: a per-session meter is cheapest only if the bot resolves most of what it touches. At a 50% resolution rate, Freshdesk’s US$0.49 a session is US$0.98 a resolution, the same as Intercom. Ask every vendor for your own resolution rate in a pilot, not theirs: Intercom says Fin averages 76%, HubSpot says 70% and Zendesk says “up to 80%”, and none of those is a measurement of your catalogue or your customers.[9] [14] [15]

## If you are buying this in India

Most Indian B2C conversations happen on WhatsApp, and that side of the bill is now small for inbound chats. Meta has charged per message since 1 July 2025; replies inside the 24-hour customer-service window have been free since 1 November 2024, and utility templates sent inside that window since 1 July 2025.[3] So the AI vendor’s meter, not Meta’s, is the cost to model. All five prices above are USD list; through an Indian reseller they are invoiced in INR with 18% GST. Hosting differs: Freshworks lists an India data centre and Salesforce’s Hyperforce has an India region, while Zendesk and HubSpot have none.[10] [11] [12] [13]

Two rules bite. The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, in force since 23 July 2020, make an e-commerce entity’s grievance officer acknowledge a complaint within 48 hours and redress it within one month.[6] A bot can acknowledge; only a working handoff to a person meets the second clock. And chat transcripts are personal data under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, whose Rules were notified on 13 November 2025 with the substantive duties in force from 13 May 2027.[7]

How we did this

Figures as of 30 September 2026

Unit prices are the published price for one unit beyond any included allowance, before GST and before seat fees. Intercom, Freshdesk and HubSpot are read from their pricing pages, Zendesk from its help-centre article on automated resolutions; Salesforce is taken from the TechBag intel page that recorded its pricing in 2026 and was not re-fetched. Hosting is read from each vendor’s own data-location page. Resolution rates are the vendors’ own claims. The worked example uses an assumed volume and resolution rate. The 2021 original’s figure that 95% of online shoppers prefer chat had no traceable source and is not used.
