# Duolingo retains 84% of its regular learners; work software publishes no such number

*What Duolingo’s June 2026 quarter measured about its streak, what the 2014 research review found, and what to ask a vendor selling “gamified” work software. September 2026.*

Gamification works where someone measures it, and the best-measured example is a consumer app, not business software. Duolingo’s shareholder letter for the quarter to 30 June 2026 reports a current-user retention rate of 84%, a record, and 15.4 million learners who opted in to restore a streak during a single June campaign.[1] None of the work-software vendors in this note publishes a number like that for its badges or leaderboards. That gap is the point of this note.

## The game layer that publishes its results

Duolingo is built around a streak, a count of consecutive days with a lesson, and it reports the outcome every quarter. In the June 2026 quarter daily active users averaged 58.7 million, up 23% on a year earlier, against 140.6 million monthly users and 12.7 million paid subscribers.[1] The company’s own comment on the streak campaign was: “It shows how much the streak matters to our learners.”[1]

## What the research found, and the figure we dropped

Our 2023 post said gamification “can increase product adoption by up to 20% and user engagement by up to 80%”. The original gave no source for either number, so both are gone. A widely cited review, by Hamari, Koivisto and Sarsa in 2014, reviewed the peer-reviewed empirical studies then published and concluded that gamification “provides positive effects, however, the effects are greatly dependent on the context in which the gamification is being implemented, as well as on the users using it.”[2] That is the honest summary: game mechanics can move behaviour, but a badge bolted onto a tool people do not need to use moves nothing.

Our view

Our view: a streak works for Duolingo because the habit is the product. In work software the habit is the job, and a leaderboard on a sales or support team ranks people on the metric the manager chose. Use it where the task is voluntary and repetitive, such as training, and be wary where it is someone’s livelihood.

## What to ask a vendor that says 'gamified'

In TechBag’s catalogue the word appears most in training. TechBag’s Kaspersky page describes its Automated Security Awareness Platform as automated, adaptive and gamified training, and Kahoot! 360 runs quizzes with a live leaderboard, from about US$19 to about US$79 a host a month.[3][4] Neither feature is a reason to buy on its own. Ask for the before-and-after number the game is meant to move: course completion, phishing-simulation click rate, time to first use. If the vendor cannot show it from a customer like you, treat the game layer as decoration and price the product without it.

**Buying in India.** Kahoot! 360 is priced in US dollars with no INR list; through a reseller it is invoiced in rupees with GST at 18%, and bought directly the GST is paid by you under reverse charge on imported services.[4][5] A leaderboard that shows employees’ names and scores processes personal data under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. The Rules were notified on 13 November 2025 and the notice, purpose and security duties apply from 13 May 2027, so tell staff what is shown, to whom, and for how long.[6][7]

How we did this

Figures as of 30 September 2026

Duolingo figures are from its shareholder letter for the quarter to 30 June 2026, filed with the SEC and published on 5 August 2026; the 42% ratio is TechBag’s division of average daily by monthly users. The review is cited by title, authors and venue (HICSS 2014); the quoted finding is from its published abstract (via OpenAlex). Kaspersky and Kahoot details are from TechBag’s intel pages as they stood on 30 September 2026. The 2023 “20% / 80%” claim had no source in the original and was removed. Nothing here measures whether gamification caused any retention figure.
