# Datadog database monitoring costs US$85 a host, not the US$70 on the card

*Datadog's Database Monitoring and Infrastructure list prices, worked for a ten-server and an Azure SQL estate, with the India position, as of September 2026.*

Datadog Database Monitoring lists at US$70 per database host a month on annual billing, but Datadog will not sell it on its own: you must already be an Infrastructure Monitoring customer, and Infrastructure Pro is another US$15 a host.[1] [2] For a self-managed database server, which is itself an Infrastructure host, the working price is US$85 a month, as of September 2026. The 2021 version of this piece listed the product’s features and stopped there. The question an Indian team actually asks is what the line item will be, and whether Datadog is the right meter for its estate at all.

## Two meters, and a host is not what you think

Datadog’s pricing page answers “can I buy Database Monitoring standalone?” with a flat no. It allots 200 normalised queries per host, defines a billable host as “any database instance”, self-hosted or cloud-managed, running one or more logical databases, and makes one exception that matters: on Azure SQL Database, each database is treated as a single host.[1] On-demand billing is US$84 for the database meter and US$18 for Infrastructure Pro.[2]

**Figure: The card says US$70; a self-managed database server costs US$85 to US$102 a month once the required Infrastructure plan is added**

TechBag countTechBag arithmetic

Ten self-managed PostgreSQL servers on annual terms: 10 × US$85 × 12 = US$10,200 a year, or US$12,240 on demand. Twenty Azure SQL databases sharing one elastic pool are twenty hosts under Datadog’s rule: 20 × US$70 × 12 = US$16,800 a year for the database meter alone. The same twenty databases on one self-managed SQL Server instance would be one host. List prices from the Datadog pages cited; the multiplication is ours.

## What the meter buys, and when it is the wrong one

The 2021 post was right about the substance. Database Monitoring keeps query metrics for normalised queries, samples execution plans, and puts both beside the host’s CPU, memory and disk, so a slow checkout can be traced to one statement and one resource. It now covers eight engine families, each self-hosted and in managed forms: PostgreSQL (including RDS, Aurora, Cloud SQL, AlloyDB and Azure), MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle (including RAC, Exadata and Autonomous Database), SQL Server, MongoDB and Atlas, Amazon DocumentDB, and ClickHouse.[3]

Our view

Our view: buy this meter when the Infrastructure hosts are already on a Datadog invoice and the application traces are there too, because the value is the correlation, not the query list. A team that runs databases and nothing else on Datadog is paying US$85 a server for something a self-hosted open-source tool does for nothing, and our [four-tool price note](https://www.thetechbag.com/blog/database-monitoring-what-downtime-costs-india) sets those options side by side. On Azure SQL with many small databases, price the per-database rule before you sign; it is the line that surprises.

## If you are buying it in India

Datadog bills in US dollars; TechBag quotes it in rupees, with 18 per cent GST on the invoice.[5] Datadog runs nine sites, in the US, Germany, the UK, Japan and Australia; none is in India, so metrics, query samples and plans leave the country.[4] Two Indian rules apply to that. CERT-In’s Directions of 28 April 2022 require ICT system logs to be kept for a rolling 180 days within Indian jurisdiction, so the database’s own logs need an in-country home whatever Datadog holds.[6] And query text can carry personal data in its literals: the DPDP Rules, notified on 13 November 2025, bring the security-safeguard and breach-intimation duties into force on 13 May 2027.[7] Datadog’s overview page does not say how literals are obfuscated; ask for that in writing.

How we did this

Figures as of September 2026

Prices, the Infrastructure requirement, the host definition, the Azure SQL rule and the 200-query allotment are read from Datadog’s pricing page and its pricing list; the engine list from the Database Monitoring documentation; the sites from Datadog’s site documentation. The worked examples multiply list prices and exclude logs, APM, extra normalised queries and any committed-use discount. Nothing is converted into rupees, because the rupee figure depends on the quote date.
