# ARPU hides the U: Dropbox earns US$140 a payer, HubSpot US$11,800 a customer

*HubSpot, Dropbox and Freshworks results for the quarter to June 2026, read for what a vendor's ARPU tells a customer about the next renewal.*

Dropbox earned US$139.68 from each paying user in the quarter to June 2026; HubSpot earned US$11,800 from each customer.[1] [2] Both are average revenue per user, both are annual rates, and the gap of about 84 times is mostly the “U”: a Dropbox payer is often one person, a HubSpot customer is a company buying seats and hubs.

The 2023 version of this piece told SaaS founders to track ARPU. The question for a buyer is different: what does a vendor’s ARPU say about the price you will be asked to pay at renewal?

## Define the U before you compare

HubSpot reports Average Subscription Revenue Per Customer: subscription revenue, as the name says, per customer account rather than per seat.[1] Dropbox divides by paying users and leaves its free users out.[2] Freshworks prints neither. It reports net dollar retention, what last year’s customers pay now: 104% in the quarter, down from 106% a year earlier.[3] Three vendors, three denominators, and no way to rank them on one scale.

TechBag countChecking that both figures are per year

HubSpot: four times its US$894.0 million subscription revenue, divided by US$11,800, gives about 303,000 customers on average, just under the 306,446 it ended the quarter with.[1] Dropbox: 18.19 million payers at US$139.68 is US$2.54 billion, close to four times its US$631.5 million quarter.[2] Both are annual. A Dropbox Business seat lists at roughly US$15 to US$24 a user a month, US$180 to US$288 a year, so the average payer sits below the cheapest business seat.[4]

## Rising ARPU is a price signal

The 2023 piece said a rise in ARPU from US$10 to US$15 “could indicate that the company has added 50% more customers”. It cannot. New customers at the same price leave the average where it was. ARPU moves on price, plan mix and expansion, which is why the chart separates it from customer growth.

**Figure: HubSpot grew on customers; Dropbox's small gain came from ARPU, not payers**

| | Customers or payers | ARPU | Revenue |

| HubSpot | 14 | 4 | 20 |
| Dropbox | 0.3 | 1 | 0.9 |

Our view

When customer growth stalls, ARPU is the only lever left, and it is pulled at your renewal. HubSpot’s US$11,800 a year is about US$983 a month, close to the roughly US$890 entry price of Marketing Hub Professional on TechBag’s page: the average customer already pays for a Professional hub.[5] Ask any vendor whose ARPU rises faster than its customer count which line of your quote will carry the rise.

**Buying in India.** HubSpot and Dropbox list in US dollars. Bought through a reseller, the INR invoice carries 18% GST; bought direct in USD, an Indian company self-assesses 18% IGST under reverse charge.[6] The renewal is also where the regulation bites. The DPDP Rules, notified on 13 November 2025, put the security and processor duties into force on 13 May 2027, and a SaaS vendor holding your customers’ data is your processor.[7] For a bank, RBI’s Directions of 31 July 2026 require audit and RBI inspection rights in vendor contracts.[8] Put both into the renewal you negotiate, not the one after.

How we did this

Figures as of 30 September 2026

Per-customer figures, customer counts, revenue and retention are as reported in each company’s results release for the quarter ended 30 June 2026; HubSpot’s growth rates are as reported, not constant currency. The annual-rate checks and the US$983 monthly figure are TechBag arithmetic. Dropbox seat prices and HubSpot’s Professional price are approximate figures from TechBag’s intel pages as they stood on 30 September 2026. Freshworks is excluded from the chart because it reports no per-customer average.
