# Instagram ads reach 48 crore Indians, X's 2.2 crore: pick two platforms, not six

The short version

- Pick two platforms, not six. YouTube and Instagram ads each reach about 48 to 50 crore people in India; X reaches 2.2 crore. For a business selling to other businesses, LinkedIn’s 17 crore members is the second platform, not the first.[1]
- The audience is still moving. Instagram’s Indian ad reach grew 22.9% in a year and LinkedIn’s 21.4%; YouTube’s grew 1.8% and X’s fell 12.3%.[1]
- Scheduling four channels costs US$20 a month on Buffer and US$79 to US$199 a seat on Sprout Social. A small team needs the first; the second pays only when listening and reporting are someone’s job.[2][3]

The original version of this piece, written in April 2023, gave six steps: set goals, choose platforms, make engaging content, reply to people, run paid ads, measure. All six are still true and none of them tells a small business where to spend its next ten hours. The question an Indian owner actually asks is narrower: with one person and a few hours a week, which platforms are worth the effort, how fast is each audience growing, and what should the software cost? This rewrite answers those three with the counts that exist, and labels which parts are reported, which are our arithmetic and which are our view.

## Two platforms reach almost everyone you can reach

DataReportal’s Digital 2026 India report counts 103 crore internet users and 50 crore active social media user identities in October 2025.[1] The platform figures below are the audiences each company’s own ad tools say an advertiser can reach. They are not monthly users, and LinkedIn’s number is registered members, which overstates how many log in. They are still the best like-for-like comparison available, because they are the numbers a business will see when it buys an ad.

The audiences overlap heavily, so the bars cannot be added. What the chart does show is the shape of the choice. Three platforms owned by two companies, Google and Meta, sit within a fifth of each other at the top. Below them the drop is steep: Snapchat reaches less than half of Instagram’s audience, and X reaches about one person in twenty-two of those YouTube can.

Our viewThe two-platform rule

A business with one person on social media should run two platforms well rather than five badly. Selling to consumers: Instagram for discovery and YouTube for anything that needs explaining. Selling to businesses: LinkedIn, because 17 crore members is the only large Indian audience sorted by employer and job title, plus YouTube for demos. Facebook stays as the page that hosts reviews and runs the ads, not as a third content calendar.

The case against the rule is worth stating. A business whose buyers are concentrated somewhere smaller should follow them there: a coaching institute whose students live on Snapchat, or a fintech whose investors argue on X, will find the audience the reach chart hides. And a platform with a smaller audience can still be cheaper to win attention on. Neither point changes the default for a shop, a clinic or a services firm with one person doing the posting. It only means the default should be checked against where last year’s customers said they found you.

## The audience is moving towards Instagram and LinkedIn

Size is the snapshot; growth is where next year’s customers will be. Over the twelve months to October 2025, Instagram added 8.95 crore reachable people in India and Facebook 3.03 crore, while LinkedIn added 3 crore members.[1] In percentage terms, the two platforms growing fastest are the two the rule above already favours.

Two cautions. DataReportal itself warns that a fall can be a platform tidying its numbers rather than people leaving, and that YouTube lost 0.9 crore between July and October 2025 after gaining over the year.[1] And growth in reach is not growth in buyers: Instagram’s gain is mostly younger users, which suits a clothing label and does little for a firm selling payroll software. The rule is still the right default, because the platform that is shrinking is the one that was never large in India.

ReportedWhere the conversation goes next

For most Indian small businesses the reply to a post happens on WhatsApp, not in a comment. Meta has billed the WhatsApp Business Platform per message since 1 July 2025, and raised its Indian marketing-message rate from 1 January 2026; a reply inside a conversation the customer started is charged differently from a broadcast.[4] Budget for broadcasts the way you budget for ads.

## The software: US$20 a month does the job for a small team

The 2023 post said “use analytics tools” and stopped. Here are the prices. Meta’s own Business Suite schedules posts, stories and ads for Facebook and Instagram and runs a single inbox for both; Meta prints no subscription price for it on its page.[5] A business that runs only those two platforms can stop there. The moment a third channel such as YouTube or LinkedIn joins, a scheduler that covers all of them saves the copy-paste.

Buffer prices by channel: US$5 a channel a month on Essentials and US$10 on Team, billed yearly.[2] Sprout Social prices by seat, with five social profiles on its Essentials and Standard plans: US$79 and US$199 a seat a month, billed yearly, rising to US$99 and US$249 billed monthly.[3]

TechBag countTechBag arithmetic

For one person running four channels for a year: Buffer Essentials is 4 × US$5 × 12 = US$240; Sprout Social Standard is US$199 × 12 = US$2,388, about ten times as much. Prices from the archived pricing pages; GST excluded.

What the extra money buys is real, and it is not scheduling. Sprout’s Standard plan adds keyword and location monitoring, review management and a shared inbox for a team, and every Sprout plan carries an AI agent with 100 credits a seat a month.[3] Buffer’s paid plans include an AI assistant with unlimited reply suggestions.[2] Our view: buy the US$20 tool until someone is paid to listen. When a brand gets enough mentions that missing one costs a customer, the monitoring is worth the seat.

The other three steps from 2023 collapse into one habit. Count, every month, the enquiries that arrived from each platform, and drop the platform that sent none for a quarter. Likes measure the post; enquiries measure the business. A two-platform plan with a monthly count beats a six-platform plan with a content calendar nobody keeps.

Paid ads deserve the same discipline. Every platform’s ad manager will report reach and clicks generously, because that is what it sells. Put a separate phone number or a tagged link on each campaign and count the enquiries yourself. If a platform cannot show you a customer for the money after two months, the problem is rarely the creative.

If you are buying this in India

**What it costs in rupees.** Buffer and Sprout bill in US dollars; through a reseller the invoice is in INR, and either way 18% GST applies on top. At Buffer’s price a four-channel year is US$240 before tax. The ad budget is the larger line, and it got simpler in 2025: the Finance Act 2025 abolished the 6% equalisation levy on online advertising bought from non-resident platforms, with effect from 1 April 2025.[6]

**The regulation that bites.** Uploading a customer list to build a lookalike or retargeting audience is processing personal data. The Digital Personal Data Protection Rules were notified on 13 November 2025 and the substantive duties on consent, notice and security apply from 13 May 2027.[7] A business that collects phone numbers and emails today should record how each one was obtained and for what, because from that date it must be able to show the consent behind every name it sends to an ad platform.

How we did this

Figures as of 30 September 2026

Platform reach and growth are DataReportal’s figures from each platform’s advertising tools, as published in its Digital 2026 India report (data for October 2025, the latest before this piece). They are ad audiences, not active users; LinkedIn’s is registered members. Crore figures are DataReportal’s millions divided by ten and rounded to one decimal. Prices are from the Buffer and Sprout Social pricing pages as archived by the Internet Archive on 28 and 25 September 2026, billed yearly, excluding tax. Hootsuite was left out because its archived September page could not be retrieved and its current page states no per-user basis. The original post’s GlobalWebIndex and Hootsuite statistics (2.5 hours a day; 90% of Instagram users follow a business) were dropped: we could not trace either to a dated primary source. No vendor named here has a special commercial arrangement with TechBag that we know of.
