Cloud accounting saves a five-user Indian business ₹31,560 over five years against TallyPrime Gold, and costs a ten-user business ₹13,440 more. Those are the two vendors’ own published Indian prices, before GST, as of September 2026.12 So the answer to the question this piece asked in 2023, whether cloud computing is a good investment for a small business, is narrower than the original claimed. The cloud is not reliably cheaper. What it reliably buys is access from anywhere and someone else running the server and the backup, and those are worth paying for only if you need them.

01Five years of books, by headcount

Zoho Books, sold only as a subscription, lists Standard at ₹749 a month per organisation for three users, Professional at ₹1,499 for five users and Premium at ₹2,999 for ten, billed annually; an extra user is ₹150 a month.1 TallyPrime is a licence you buy once: Silver for one user at ₹22,500 and Gold for any number of users on the office network at ₹67,500, each with the first year of Tally Software Services included. After that, TSS, which carries the statutory updates, e-invoicing and the TallyDrive backup, renews at ₹4,500 a year for Silver and ₹13,500 for Gold.2

The subscription wins up to five users; above that the one-time Tally licence is cheaper

02What the cloud actually buys

The cost line hides the real difference. Tally Gold runs on the office network; to reach it from home or a branch you add Tally’s Cloud Access, sold in 3, 6 and 12-month terms with tiers listed from ₹450 to ₹750 plus GST, a unit Tally’s guide does not state, so ask for the quote.2 TechBag’s own intel page calls that model what it is: hosted desktop, the same Tally reached remotely, not a browser-native application.3 Zoho Books is reachable from any browser or phone on day one. And a business with turnover under ₹25 lakh can use Zoho Books’ free plan, which no desktop licence matches.4

03If you are buying this in India

Add 18% GST to every price above; a registered business claims it back as input tax credit.7 A company has one more rule to check before moving its books: since the Companies (Accounts) Fourth Amendment Rules, G.S.R. 624(E) of 5 August 2022, books kept electronically must be accessible in India at all times and backed up daily to servers physically located in India, and the board report must name the service provider and where the books sit.5 Ask any cloud accounting vendor, in writing, where that daily backup lives. The ledger also holds customer and employee personal data: the DPDP Rules were notified on 13 November 2025 and the security-safeguard and breach-notice duties apply from 13 May 2027.6 TechBag quotes both products in INR with GST.
