Quick answer

Cohesity is the world's largest data protection provider — an AI-powered data-security-and-management company that protects, secures and helps you get insight from your data, built for the reality that backup is now a security concern (ransomware) and data is a strategic asset. Founded in 2013 by Mohit Aron — a computer scientist who was a lead engineer on the Google File System and co-founded Nutanix — and headquartered in Santa Clara, California (with a major India presence in Bangalore and Pune), Cohesity is led by CEO Sanjay Poonen (formerly COO of VMware). In December 2024 Cohesity completed its combination with Veritas's enterprise data-protection business (bringing NetBackup and Veritas Alta), making the combined company the world's largest data-protection provider — valued at over $7 billion, protecting more than 12,000 customers including 85+ of the Fortune 100 and around 70% of the Global 500. Cohesity's approach: a scale-out platform that consolidates data protection (versus legacy silos), with strong cyber resilience (immutable backups, threat detection, fast clean recovery), and AI (Gaia) to unlock insight from your protected data. TechBag presents five of its products as full intel pages: DataProtect (the modern scale-out backup & recovery core); NetBackup (the enterprise workhorse, from Veritas — still sold, still NetBackup, modernised); FortKnox (cyber vaulting — a SaaS, isolated, immutable air-gapped vault); Gaia (generative-AI conversational search over your data); and Veritas Alta (SaaS/cloud data protection & compliance). From backup, to cyber resilience, to AI insight — from the market leader. TechBag scopes, licenses and quotes Cohesity in INR/GST for Indian organisations. Read more ↓ Show less ↑

DataProtect

Modern, cyber-resilient, scale-out backup.

Cohesity's modern, scale-out backup and recovery platform — broad workload protection (VMs, databases, NAS, physical, apps, cloud, SaaS) with strong cyber resilience (immutable backups, threat detection, fast/mass/clean recovery) and consolidation (one platform, not silos). Built for the ransomware era, where backup is a security concern. Self-managed or SaaS. The modern core of the portfolio.

Backup is now a security concernExplore
Enterprise Backup (ex-Veritas)Intel page →

NetBackup

The enterprise workhorse — broadest coverage.

The enterprise backup 'workhorse' (from Veritas, now part of Cohesity) — the broadest workload/application coverage in the industry (including complex, legacy and specialised systems), proven scale for the largest estates, and a vast install base. Still sold, still NetBackup, being MODERNISED (not retired) under Cohesity, with a modernisation path onto the platform and customer choice.

FortKnox

An isolated copy attackers can't reach.

A cyber vault — a secure, isolated, immutable off-site copy of your critical data that ransomware can't reach, so a clean copy always survives even if everything else is compromised. Delivered as SaaS (a modern 'virtual air gap'), with network/access isolation, WORM immutability and thorough lockdown (MFA, quorum, RBAC). The isolated last line of defence. Also self-managed or on Google Cloud.

Gaia

Talk to your own data.

A generative-AI, conversational search assistant — ask questions of your own data in plain English and get cited answers — turning the vast backup data you already hold (normally inert) into a searchable knowledge asset. Uses RAG (grounded in your data), done responsibly (grounded, cited, access-aware), with broadening reach (backup, on-prem, Databricks/Fabric, M365 Copilot). A pioneer in AI-over-backup.

SaaS/Cloud Protection & ComplianceIntel page →

Veritas Alta

Cloud/SaaS data protection + compliance.

The SaaS/cloud data protection and compliance platform (from Veritas, now part of Cohesity) — protect cloud, hybrid and SaaS (Microsoft 365) data as-a-service, with deep compliance and data-governance heritage (eDiscovery, records, retention). SaaS data is YOUR responsibility to protect, not the provider's — Alta closes that gap. The cloud/SaaS-and-compliance side of the portfolio.

Protect AND govern cloud/SaaS dataExplore

RecoveryAgent & Cleanroom

Platform & engine

AI cyber-recovery orchestration (RecoveryAgent, across NetBackup and DataProtect) and cleanroom / Cloud Application Recovery — rebuilding a clean environment from trusted baselines after an attack. The orchestrated cyber-recovery layer that turns a clean copy into a recovered business.

DataHawk & DSPM (Cyera)

Platform & engine

Cohesity's data-security capabilities — threat detection, ML-based data classification, and cyber vaulting (via FortKnox) — with data security posture management (DSPM) powered by Cyera. The security dimension: know, classify and protect your sensitive data across the estate.

The thesis

Why “protect, secure and get insight from your data” is the whole story

Ransomware made backup a security concern (backups are the last line of defence, and a target), and backup sprawled into costly silos. Cohesity bet onscale-out consolidation plus cyber resilience plus AI— cyber-resilient scale-out backup (DataProtect), enterprise depth (NetBackup), cyber vaulting (FortKnox), cloud/SaaS + compliance (Alta) and AI (Gaia), from the world’s largest data-protection provider doubled down on it.

01
The platform

The Cohesity Data Cloud

A scale-out, hyperconverged platform that consolidates data protection (and more) — versus the fragmented silos of legacy backup — spanning hybrid and multicloud, managed via one control plane (Helios). Cohesity's founding architecture: consolidate, protect, secure and get insight from your data on one web-scale platform.

02
The foundation

Protect — Backup & Recovery

DataProtect (modern scale-out) and NetBackup (enterprise workhorse, from Veritas) protect the broadest range of workloads — with cyber resilience (immutable, fast/clean/mass recovery) — plus Veritas Alta for cloud/SaaS as-a-service. From modern to enterprise to cloud, one portfolio (the world's largest DP provider).

03
The defence

Secure — Cyber Resilience

Cyber resilience across the platform — immutable backups, threat/anomaly detection, clean and mass recovery, FortKnox cyber vaulting (an isolated last-resort copy), and data security (DSPM/classification) — so you can survive and recover from ransomware WITHOUT paying. Defence in depth for the ransomware era.

04
The intelligence

Insight — Gaia AI

Gaia — a generative-AI conversational search assistant — turns your protected data into a searchable knowledge asset (ask in plain English, get cited answers), responsibly (grounded, cited, access-aware). A data-protection vendor uniquely positioned to offer AI-over-your-data: the data's already there.

05
The direction

One Vendor, Converging Roadmap

Following the Veritas combination, DataProtect and NetBackup (and Alta) are being unified under one control plane (Helios) with a converging roadmap — and Cohesity gives customers choice (stay/modernise/move) with investments preserved. The market leader's comprehensive, converging portfolio.

Start with DataProtect (modern cyber-resilient backup) or your biggest need — enterprise coverage (NetBackup), a cyber vault (FortKnox), cloud/SaaS (Alta) — then add AI (Gaia).

The acronym decoder

Every term on these pages, in one place
Data protection
Backing up data so it's protected and — crucially — recoverable, now including cyber resilience against ransomware.
Cyber resilience
The ability to survive and recover from cyberattacks (esp. ransomware) — immutable backups, threat detection, isolated vaults, clean/fast recovery.
Immutable backup
A backup stored so it can't be encrypted, altered or deleted (WORM) — so it survives a ransomware attack.
Cyber vault (air gap)
An isolated, off-network, immutable copy of critical data attackers can't reach — the last-resort guarantee (Cohesity FortKnox).
Scale-out / hyperconverged
An architecture that grows by adding nodes, consolidating data on one web-scale platform (Cohesity's founding approach) — vs fragmented silos.
DataProtect
Cohesity's modern scale-out backup and recovery platform — the cyber-resilient core.
NetBackup
The enterprise backup workhorse (from Veritas, now Cohesity) — broadest coverage, largest estates; still sold and modernised.
FortKnox
Cohesity's cyber vault — a SaaS, isolated, immutable air-gapped copy (the last line of defence).
Gaia
Cohesity's generative-AI conversational search over your (backup) data — ask in plain English, get cited answers.
Veritas Alta
Cohesity's SaaS/cloud data protection and compliance platform (from Veritas) — incl. M365/SaaS backup and governance/eDiscovery.
SaaS backup responsibility
SaaS data (e.g. Microsoft 365) is YOUR responsibility to back up, not the provider's — a widely-overlooked gap.
The Veritas combination
Cohesity completed its combination with Veritas's enterprise DP business (NetBackup, Alta) in Dec 2024, becoming the world's largest DP provider. (Backup Exec/InfoScale went to Arctera, not Cohesity.)
Track 02 · Buying guides

Buy it like you’ve done this before

The procurement playbook TechBag runs with IT buyers — steps, licensing cheat-sheet, and the pitfalls that cost quarters.

01

Assess your data-protection needs

Your estate (workloads, cloud, SaaS), ransomware exposure and recovery needs, compliance requirements, and existing backup (incl. NetBackup). That points to the right products. TechBag scopes it free.

02

Choose within the portfolio

DataProtect (modern scale-out), NetBackup (enterprise workhorse), FortKnox (cyber vault), Alta (cloud/SaaS + compliance), Gaia (AI insight) — often a combination (e.g. DataProtect + FortKnox). TechBag clarifies the fit and the converging roadmap.

03

Prioritise cyber resilience

In the ransomware era, ensure immutability, threat detection, clean/mass recovery (DataProtect) — and, for critical data, an isolated cyber vault (FortKnox). Defence in depth: survive and recover WITHOUT paying.

04

Compare on the right lane

Rubrik is the closest modern rival (weigh head-to-head); Veeam for broad simplicity/value; Commvault/Dell for enterprise; Druva for pure-SaaS. Within Cohesity, weigh DataProtect vs NetBackup vs Alta. TechBag advises honestly.

05

Right-size (and test recovery)

Cohesity is quote-priced (capacity/subscription/SaaS). Right-size the capacity and products — and, crucially, TEST recovery (it's what matters). TechBag scopes and quotes in INR/GST.

06

Buy through the channel

TechBag is your local partner for scoping the portfolio, honest comparisons, deployment, cyber-resilience design, and support — mapped to Indian needs (RBI, DPDP), INR/GST invoicing throughout.

Quote-priced by capacity (per-TB), subscription or SaaS consumption across the products — TechBag right-sizes the portfolio and quotes in INR/GST for your size.

Five pitfalls that cost buyers quarters

1

Treating backup as insurance, not security

Ransomware attackers target your backups (to force you to pay), so backup is now a security concern — backups must be immutable (survive the attack), threat-aware (detect it), and fast/clean-recovering (actually recover you). Legacy backup an attacker can destroy is a liability. Cohesity DataProtect makes backup cyber-resilient. Don't rely on destructible backups in the ransomware era.

2

Assuming Microsoft 365 / SaaS data is backed up (it isn't)

SaaS providers keep the SERVICE running, but protecting YOUR DATA (against deletion, ransomware, retention gaps) is largely YOUR responsibility — they offer only limited retention, not comprehensive backup. Many organisations lose SaaS data assuming it's covered. Veritas Alta (SaaS Protection) backs up your M365/SaaS data. Don't assume — back up your SaaS data.

3

Having backups but no isolated last resort

Immutable backups are strong, but the most cautious strategies (critical/regulated data) want an isolated copy attackers can't reach at all — so a clean copy survives even a total compromise. Cohesity FortKnox is that cyber vault (a virtual air gap, as SaaS). For your most critical data, don't rely on a single layer — add an isolated vault.

4

Fearing NetBackup is being retired (it isn't)

After the Veritas combination, NetBackup is still sold, still NetBackup, and being MODERNISED (not retired), with a modernisation path onto Cohesity's platform and customer choice (stay/modernise/move) — investments preserved. Don't abandon NetBackup out of uncertainty; understand its clear, backed future. TechBag clarifies the roadmap.

5

Focusing on backup, forgetting recovery (and testing it)

The point of backup is RECOVERY — fast, at scale, and clean — and that's where legacy tools fail (slow, one-at-a-time, reinfection risk). Cohesity's fast/mass/clean recovery is what actually matters in a disaster. And test it: an untested recovery is a hope, not a guarantee. Don't measure backup by copies made — measure it by recovery, tested.
