The thesis

Why “cloud or direct” is the whole story

Some screens sit on factory floors, labs and closed networks where a cloud relay is not welcome. RealVNC bet on the same VNC connection over the cloud or straight across the LAN— with recordings kept on the technician’s own machine and offline licensing on Enterprise.

01
On the remote machine

RealVNC Server

The agent you install, and license, on each computer you want to reach unattended. A mobile Server app lets Enterprise teams view phones and tablets.

02
On your side

RealVNC Connect app and Viewer

Version 8 merged viewer and server into one app. The standalone viewer is now RealVNC Connect Viewer; the older Classic Viewer is kept for offline and direct use.

03
The connection layer

Cloud brokering

Sessions try a peer-to-peer route first and fall back to a relay run in RealVNC’s own data centres in the US and UK. Nothing needs an inbound port opened.

04
The management layer

Portal and On-Prem Console

Teams, devices, permissions and audit live in the online Portal. Enterprise customers running offline can add a Management Console on their own Windows Server.

Start with the edition your connection count needs; direct LAN connections need Premium and offline use needs Enterprise.

Track 02 · Buying guides

Buy it like you’ve done this before

The procurement playbook TechBag runs with IT buyers — steps, licensing cheat-sheet, and the pitfalls that cost quarters.

01

Count sessions, not seats

Connect is priced by how many sessions run at the same time. Work out your busiest hour, then check the plan’s user and device caps.

02

Confirm it is commercial use

The free Lite plan is for non-commercial use only and comes without technical support. A business needs a paid plan; the trial runs 14 days with no card.

03

Match features to the plan

Recording starts on Plus. LAN connections, audit logs and session MFA need Premium. Single sign-on and offline licensing need Enterprise.

04

Decide cloud or offline

The cloud broker runs in RealVNC’s US and UK data centres, and RealVNC says it cannot see session data. Enterprise can run with no internet at all.

05

Compare per-user help-desk pricing

For attended support, HelpDesk plans are priced per user: from $16.49 on Plus and $24.99 on Premium a month, billed yearly. Confirm the live figure.

06

Get it quoted in rupees

RealVNC lists prices only in USD, EUR and GBP. TechBag sizes the plan, quotes in INR with GST and helps with rollout and support.

RealVNC Connect is priced per active connection in USD, billed annually; Enterprise is quoted. TechBag quotes in INR with GST.

Five pitfalls that cost buyers quarters

1

Reading $8.75 as a per-device price

Since November 2024 Connect has been priced per active connection. Essentials covers one user, one session and three devices; per-device figures on third-party sites describe the retired model.

2

Running the business on the free plan

The old free Home plan was withdrawn in 2024. What remains, Connect Lite, is for non-commercial use and has no technical support.

3

Expecting SAML single sign-on

Connect’s account SSO uses OpenID Connect, is available only on Enterprise, and RealVNC has fully tested it with Entra ID and Okta. Check your identity provider first.

4

Assuming recordings are kept centrally

Session recordings are saved as files on the technician’s own device; RealVNC never holds them. Good for data control, but you must collect and retain them yourself.

5

Opening VNC ports to the internet

Shadowserver scans for exposed VNC servers and, since May 2025, tags those with no authentication. Connect’s cloud route is outbound-only; keep direct connections inside your LAN or VPN.

Skip the homework entirely

Bring your requirements and current tool bills — a TechBag advisor models the whole decision for you.
