Quick answer

Wazuh is an open-source security platform that combines SIEM and XDR in one system: agents on your endpoints and servers ship logs, file-integrity events, vulnerability findings and configuration-assessment results to a central manager, which correlates them against detection rules and stores them in an indexer you can query. The core platform is genuinely free under GPLv2 — no licence fee, no per-agent charge, no feature paywall, no ingestion metering. That is not a trial or a crippled community edition; it is the whole product. So what does TechBag actually sell you? Two things. Wazuh Cloud is the managed service: Wazuh runs the cluster, indexer, storage, upgrades and availability, and you get a tenant with agents pointed at it. Reported pricing runs from about $571/month for up to 100 agents, $923/month for 250 and $1,467/month for 500, with custom terms above that and a 14-day trial needing no card. The tier is all-in — infrastructure and operations sit inside the subscription rather than beside it. Wazuh Professional Support is for buyers who keep the platform on their own infrastructure but want the vendor accountable: Standard is 8/5 with an eight-hour response SLA and two health checks a year; Premium is 24/7 on critical issues with a four-hour SLA and four health checks. Both include architecture guidance, upgrade support, custom rules and dashboards, and a named customer success manager. The honest framing: the licence is free, the system is not. The real cost is infrastructure plus the engineering time to run a distributed indexer well, and at Indian salaries that arithmetic comes out roughly level with a Cloud subscription at 250 agents — not the clear saving people assume. Where Wazuh is genuinely strong for India: it runs fully on-premises or air-gapped, with offline vulnerability feeds and no mandatory vendor telemetry. For an RBI, SEBI or IRDAI-regulated buyer whose mandate rules out SaaS, that is something Microsoft Sentinel, Google Security Operations and Securonix structurally cannot offer. Wazuh Cloud

The whole platform, run for you, priced by agent count.

Wazuh operates the manager, indexer, dashboard, storage and upgrades; you deploy agents and use the console. Tiers are Small (100 agents, one month indexed, three months archive), Medium (250 agents, three months indexed, one year archive) and Large (500 agents, same retention as Medium), with custom terms beyond 500. Standard support, PCI-DSS and SOC 2 attestation and continuous updates are included in every tier — there is no feature difference between them, only capacity and retention. Read the retention column before the agent column: it forces the tier more often than headcount does.

For teams self-hosting on-premises, in their own cloud tenancy or air-gapped, where the deployment must stay under their control but cannot depend on community forums when it breaks. Standard delivers 8/5 coverage with an eight-hour response SLA and two health checks annually; Premium delivers 24/7 on critical issues, a four-hour SLA and four health checks. Both include architecture and sizing guidance, upgrade planning, custom rule, decoder and dashboard development, and a dedicated customer success manager. Pricing is quoted per environment — there is no published list to benchmark against.

The thesis

Why “the licence is free, the system is not” is the whole story

Almost every SIEM meters you on the thing you most need to do — collect security data — so the budget conversation quietly becomes an argument for logging less. Wazuh removes that meter entirely: the core is free under GPLv2, with no agent cap and no feature paywall— the detection engine, compliance mappings, vulnerability detection and active response are all in the free core, not held back for an enterprise edition. What Wazuh sells is not features but the removal of operational burden: Cloud runs the cluster for you, Professional Support makes the vendor accountable for the one you run yourself. The honest consequence is that your real cost is infrastructure plus engineering time, which at Indian salaries lands close to the subscription you were avoiding — so choose self-hosting for sovereignty, control or scale, not for a saving that may not exist.

01
One agent across

One agent across a genuinely mixed estate

A single lightweight agent runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, Solaris, AIX and HP-UX, plus containers and cloud workloads, collecting logs, file-integrity events, running processes, installed packages, users and groups rather than only forwarding syslog. Agentless collection covers network devices. For Indian estates that are genuinely heterogeneous — a Windows domain, a rack of RHEL, some legacy AIX and a growing Kubernetes footprint — one agent covering all of it removes a real integration tax.

02
Detection logic you

Detection logic you can actually read

Decoders normalise raw log formats into structured fields; rules correlate those fields into alerts, each mapped to MITRE ATT&CK. Thousands ship out of the box. Because both are plain files you can open and edit, the detection logic is fully inspectable and portable — no proprietary correlation language, no black box. That matters when an auditor asks you to demonstrate how an alert was produced, and it matters again when you want to leave.

03
Compliance and configuration

Compliance and configuration assessment, continuously

Security Configuration Assessment scans endpoints against CIS benchmarks and reports drift continuously rather than at audit time, with built-in mappings for PCI-DSS, HIPAA, NIST 800-53, GDPR and TSC. For Indian buyers this is the practical answer to CERT-In's requirement that logs from all ICT systems be enabled and retained for a rolling 180 days within Indian jurisdiction — self-hosted, both the collection and the storage location are entirely under your control.

04
Vulnerability detection that

Vulnerability detection that survives an air gap

The agent maintains a package inventory per endpoint and correlates it against CVE feeds without authenticated network scans. Critically for regulated deployments, those feeds can be supplied offline, so vulnerability detection keeps working in a disconnected network. A vulnerability module that silently stops updating in an air-gapped environment gives false assurance, which is worse than none — Wazuh documents the offline path properly.

05
The licence is

The licence is free; the system is not

This is the honest centre of the whole proposition. The core costs nothing and never will. What costs money is infrastructure and the engineering time to run a distributed indexer well — and at Indian salaries that comes out roughly level with a Cloud subscription at 250 agents, not the clear saving people assume. Self-hosting wins decisively above about 500 agents, and absolutely under an air-gap mandate. Choose it for sovereignty, control or scale, not for a saving that may not exist.

Start with Infrastructure Monitoring (the core) — then add APM, Logs, Cloud Security and Digital Experience, all correlated on one platform. (And manage the cost — TechBag’s key value.)

The acronym decoder

Every term on these pages, in one place
Agent
The lightweight collector installed on each endpoint; ships logs, inventory and integrity events to the manager.
Manager
The central server that decodes, correlates and applies rules to everything agents send.
Indexer
The search and storage layer holding processed events — the component that most often drives cost and operational effort.
Decoder
A file that parses a raw log line into named fields so rules can act on it. Plain text you can read and edit.
Rule
The correlation logic turning decoded fields into an alert, with a severity level and a MITRE ATT&CK mapping.
FIM
File Integrity Monitoring — continuous watching of critical files and registry keys for unauthorised change.
SCA
Security Configuration Assessment — scanning endpoints against hardening benchmarks such as CIS and reporting drift.
Active Response
An automated action executed on the endpoint when a rule fires: blocking an IP, disabling an account, quarantining a file.
Indexed retention
How long events stay hot and directly searchable in the dashboard. One month on Cloud Small, three on Medium and Large.
Archive retention
How long events remain in colder storage after leaving the index — longer and cheaper, but not instantly queryable. Three months on Small, a year on Medium and Large.
Air-gapped deployment
A fully disconnected installation with no internet path, using offline packages and offline CVE feeds.
GPLv2
The licence covering Wazuh's core, granting free use and modification with no agent cap and no feature paywall.
Track 02 · Buying guides

Buy it like you’ve done this before

The procurement playbook TechBag runs with IT buyers — steps, licensing cheat-sheet, and the pitfalls that cost quarters.

01

Count agents and name your constraint

Total endpoints, servers, containers and cloud workloads needing an agent — then state plainly whether SaaS is permitted by your regulator or contracts. That single answer eliminates roughly half the market before you compare anything.

02

Decide the deployment model before the vendor

Cloud, self-hosted with support, or self-hosted unsupported. Choose on your existing ops capacity and your mandate, not on the licence price — the licence is zero either way.

03

Run the 14-day Cloud trial with real sources

No card required. Point genuine production log sources at it rather than a lab, and measure alert volume and noise on your actual estate. Very few SIEM vendors let you evaluate this honestly without a sales process.

04

Price both paths over three years

Cloud subscription against infrastructure plus the fraction of engineering headcount self-hosting will consume. At Indian salaries and 250 agents these come out roughly level — the answer is genuinely not obvious.

05

Test retention against your obligation

Check indexed AND archive retention in your tier against CERT-In's rolling 180 days and any sectoral rule. Decide whether your obligation is to RETAIN or to INVESTIGATE — they need different tiers.

06

Get the residency answer in writing

Wazuh does not publicly document an India hosting region. If your mandate requires Indian-jurisdiction storage, settle this before you trial. TechBag gets it confirmed as part of the quote.

Metered on GB per day in tiered bands, with commitment plus pay-as-you-go. The number worth reading twice: overage defaults to 120% of your GB/day rate if the order form leaves it blank. The cost that surprises is your engineers’ time, not the licence. The compounds across modules. TechBag scopes the tier you actually need AND prices your engineers’ time honestly (Elastic bills USD; GST added).

Five pitfalls that cost buyers quarters

1

Budgeting the licence at zero and stopping there

The licence genuinely is zero. The indexer cluster, the storage, the upgrades and the on-call rota are not. Teams that skip this arithmetic discover it at the first 2am cluster failure — and at Indian salaries a 0.3-0.5 FTE commitment is several lakh a year, which is the same order as the subscription they avoided.

2

Sizing on agent count and ignoring retention

The Cloud tiers cap agents, but indexed retention differs sharply — one month on Small, three on Medium and Large. A buyer with 80 agents and a 180-day obligation may need a tier upgrade driven entirely by retention. Read the retention column first; it is the commonest sizing error.

3

Assuming self-hosting automatically satisfies residency

Self-hosting gives you control over placement — it does not guarantee correct placement. You still have to put the indexer in Indian jurisdiction and be able to prove it. Control is a precondition for compliance, not a substitute.

4

Confusing support with a managed service, or with MDR

Three different purchases. Professional Support means you run it and the vendor helps when you are stuck. Cloud means the vendor runs it. MDR means someone watches your alerts and responds — Wazuh does not sell that at all. Buyers who conflate these are consistently disappointed.

5

Underestimating tuning

Every SIEM is noisy in week one, and Wazuh's breadth of collection makes it noisier than most. Without allocated tuning effort the deployment produces alerts nobody reads. Name the person and the weeks before you buy — deployments fail here far more often than on technology.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask about Wazuh

Wazuh is a unified SIEM and XDR platform. Agents installed on endpoints and servers collect logs, file-integrity events, package inventories and configuration-assessment results, and send them to a central manager that decodes, correlates and alerts on them, storing everything in an indexer you can search. The core of that platform is free under GPLv2, and we want to be unambiguous because getting this wrong would waste your time: there is no licence fee, no per-agent charge, no ingestion metering and no feature paywall. The detection engine, the compliance mappings, the vulnerability detection, the active response — all of it is in the free core. There is no enterprise edition holding features back. You can run Wazuh across ten thousand endpoints and pay Wazuh nothing. So what is sold? Two things, and neither is a feature unlock. Wazuh Cloud sells you the operation of the platform: Wazuh runs the manager, indexer, storage, upgrades and availability, and you consume it as a tenant. Professional Support sells you vendor accountability on a deployment you continue to run yourself: SLAs, health checks, architecture guidance, custom rule development and a named customer success manager. The mental model that helps is that Wazuh does not sell software, it sells the removal of operational burden — which is why the pricing is structured around agents and support hours rather than features or data volume. Your decision is therefore not 'free version or paid version'. It is 'who operates this'. If you have a capable platform team with spare capacity, the free core on your own infrastructure is a legitimate and fully supported answer. What you should not do is assume it costs nothing.
