The sales head wants last quarter by region before lunch. The data team’s queue is three days long — Databricks Genie lets business users ask company data questions in plain language — Genie One for chat and search, Genie Agents curated by the data team — answered from Unity Catalog–governed lakehouse tables, in the browser, Excel, Slack or Teams.

This page covers Databricks Genie — Genie One and Genie Agents for business users; Genie Code, the developer sibling, has its own page. The rest:

Genie lets staff ask company data questions in plain language and get a table, a chart and the SQL behind it.
What consolidation actually replaces, dimension by dimension.
| Dimension | Tickets to the MIS team | Databricks Genie |
|---|---|---|
| Getting a number | A ticket to the MIS team | A plain-language question, answered with its SQL |
| Where people ask | A BI portal few open | Excel, Sheets, Slack, Teams or the web |
| Data copies | Extracts into a BI server | Queries the governed lakehouse tables directly |
| Access rules | Rebuilt in each tool | Unity Catalog grants, masks and row filters reused |
| AI cost | Per-seat add-on licences | Per-DBU meter; named users’ LLM use free to Jan 2027 |
| What it is NOT | — | A BI tool for data outside Databricks, or free compute |
The cheapest test is one Genie Agent on one domain before 31 January 2027: you pay only for warehouse compute while you learn how much people really ask.
Vendors love diagrams; buyers need to know what they’re actually operating. Here’s the whole platform, demystified.
A chat, search and documents home for staff who never open a notebook; it opens dashboards and Genie Agents from one place, on the web or in Slack, Teams or Excel.
Analysts pick the tables, write instructions and sample queries, and publish a scoped agent for one domain, such as collections or inventory, that users then question in plain language.
Unity Catalog grants decide what each user may see; the Genie Ontology, a context graph that learns from real usage, adds business meaning. Ontology pricing is still marked coming soon.
Each answer runs SQL on a warehouse billed at warehouse rates, while the model work bills as Serverless Real-time Inference DBUs once a promotion or the monthly allowance is used up.
Users ask in Genie One or a curated Genie Agent, Unity Catalog decides what they see, and a SQL warehouse runs the query — compute and inference bill separately.
Databricks Genie answers business questions from governed lakehouse tables, under each user’s own Unity Catalog permissions.
Genie One answers questions such as last quarter’s sales by region with a table, a chart and the SQL it ran, so the result can be checked.
Since August 2026 Genie One works inside Excel and Google Sheets; the Slack and Teams apps, both Public Preview, answer in a channel or DM.
A Beta web search lets Genie One cite outside sources for current facts, and a macOS desktop app (Beta) keeps it out of the browser.
Data teams build Genie Agents on chosen tables with instructions and example SQL, so a finance user only asks inside a finance scope.
The Genie Ontology is a context graph built from actual usage, plus Pages that people model by hand; its own price is not yet published.
A Genie Agent can be shared with another organisation over OpenSharing (Beta since June 2026), where the recipient mounts it locally.
Every query runs as the asking user under Unity Catalog grants, so row filters and column masks set by the data team still apply.
The Genie One MCP server, GA since September 2026, lets outside MCP clients ground their data questions in Genie with permissions enforced.
Admins cap Genie spend per user through Unity AI Gateway budgets and alerts; the 150 free monthly DBUs are never blocked by a budget.

Genie reads the same Delta and Iceberg tables your engineers maintain, so there is no extract to a BI server and no second copy to keep fresh. Each answer shows the SQL it ran, which lets an analyst check a number before it reaches a board pack, and the asking user’s Unity Catalog grants decide what comes back.
Databricks is waiving LLM charges for Genie One and Genie Agents used by named people, under a promotion that runs to 31 January 2027. The warehouse that executes each query is still billed at normal rates, so a pilot costs compute only. From February 2027, each user gets 150 DBUs a month before the meter starts.
Business users rarely open a data platform. Genie One now sits inside Excel and Google Sheets, answers in Slack and Teams channels (both in Public Preview), runs as a macOS app in Beta, and exposes an MCP server so other agents can ask it. Data teams decide the scope through curated Genie Agents.
It only answers over data governed in a Databricks workspace. Service principals pay for every DBU, the Genie Ontology has no price yet, and mobile access is by request. In the India Geo, Genie One chat and Agent mode leave India for processing unless you turn cross-Geo off and lose them. Model the bill from February 2027 before rollout.
Choose a domain with repeat questions, such as collections or stock, and list the tables and metric definitions it uses.
Decide with legal whether cross-Geo processing stays on for an Indian workspace, and record it in the DPDP register.
Create a Genie Agent with instructions and sample SQL, then test it on last quarter’s real questions and check every number.
Roll out to one team in Excel, Slack or Teams, set Unity AI Gateway budgets, and track warehouse compute per answer.
Project DBUs per user past the 150 allowance from the pilot data, then take TechBag’s INR quote with GST for the rollout.

“Branch managers now ask collections questions in Teams instead of mailing the MIS desk. The SQL under each answer won over our auditors.”
“Our supply planners use it from Excel. It took two rounds of instructions on the agent before plant codes were read the right way.”
“Free LLM use made the pilot easy to approve, but the serverless warehouse bill still arrived. Budget for compute from day one.”
“Our Mumbai workspace keeps data here, but chat is processed outside India by default. Legal needed a week on the cross-Geo setting.”
“Scoping one Genie Agent per sales region kept answers tight. Broad agents across forty tables gave vaguer results.”
“Row filters we had already set in Unity Catalog just worked, so a zonal head never sees another zone’s numbers in an answer.”
Analyst firms bury this view behind paywalls, and review-site grids score satisfaction, not fit for your estate. So here’s TechBag’s synthesis of the AI analytics and conversational BI market — tap any vendor to see why it sits where it does.
Execution strength vs product vision — the classic market map, minus the paywall.
Named users’ LLM use free to Jan 2027; then $0.07 per DBU.
The grid nobody publishes — how many places business users can ask vs how firmly answers are tied to governed definitions, permissions and curated scope.
Seven surfaces plus MCP; Unity Catalog grants and curated agents.

Drag the sliders (ad-hoc data requests a year; analyst-hour cost). Estimates model the analyst time spent on one-off number requests from business teams, at an assumed 1.5 hours per request, with 70% of it removed when users ask a curated Genie Agent themselves. Both figures are assumptions, and compute and DBU charges are not netted off. Illustrative.
Loaded cost = salary + overheads per productive hour. Illustrative only — your TechBag quote models your actual environment and modules.
Pay as you go, no seats. Genie bills LLM work on the Serverless Real-time Inference SKU: $0.07 per DBU in US East and $0.074 in AWS Mumbai and Azure Central India. Until 31 January 2027, Genie One and Genie Agents LLM use by named users is free; from 1 February 2027 each user gets 150 free DBUs a month (about $10.50 in US East) before the meter runs. SQL warehouse compute and service principals are billed at all times. TechBag quotes in INR with GST.
