Your checkout and login pages can’t be cached. They shouldn’t crawl across the public internet — Akamai Ion speeds up websites and apps from Akamai’s edge — caching what it can, racing uncacheable requests to your origin, and tuning each page from real-user data, with a 100% availability SLA.

This page covers Akamai Ion — web and app performance. The rest:
Most product pages skip this. We start here — so you buy a capability, not a buzzword.
An edge network that caches what it can and speeds up the rest on its way to and from your origin.
What consolidation actually replaces, dimension by dimension.
| Dimension | Origin plus a basic cache | Akamai Ion |
|---|---|---|
| Uncacheable requests | Cross the public internet to the origin | Carried over SureRoute’s fastest tested path |
| Page assets | Fetched only when the browser asks | Prefetched at the edge from the parent page |
| Images on slow links | One size, whatever the connection | Compressed to suit live network conditions |
| Front-end tuning | A code release for every fix | Edge rules, guided by mPulse user data |
| Rolling out a change | Straight to production, then hope | A staging activation, then production |
| What it is NOT | — | A WAF, a video service, or a published price |
The cheapest test is one hostname on staging: build the property, run your checkout path through it, and compare real-user timings.
Vendors love diagrams; buyers need to know what they’re actually operating. Here’s the whole platform, demystified.
Hostnames, origins and behaviours live in a versioned property built from seven rules, from Accelerate delivery to Minimize payload, which you edit in the UI, by API or Terraform.
Edge servers cache content near users and speak HTTP/3 and HTTP/2 to browsers, while the Enhanced Akamai Protocol and SureRoute carry uncacheable requests back to your origin.
Real-user timing from mPulse feeds a learning engine that prepositions and pushes the resources each page needs first; Akamai says start render improves by up to 5%.
Device Characterization and Client Hints let rules vary images and redirects by device, and EdgeWorkers, a separate catalogue product, runs your own JavaScript at the edge.
One versioned property on Akamai’s edge — caching, SureRoute to the origin, and page tuning learned from mPulse user data.
Akamai Ion caches what it can at the edge and speeds up every request that still has to reach your origin.
SureRoute races several paths between edge and origin and uses the quickest; Akamai advises it for content that cannot be cached.
HTTP/3 over QUIC is included and switched on by default in an Ion property, and HTTP/2 stays permanently enabled beside it.
The edge reads a parent HTML page and pulls its embedded files before the browser asks, skipping user agents flagged as bots.
An optional learning engine reads mPulse data and pushes critical resources first; Akamai puts the start-render gain at up to 5%.
Adaptive Image Compression shrinks images for mobile visitors according to live network conditions, so weak connections get smaller files.
Automated controls limit how much first- and third-party scripts slow a page, a common drag on tag-heavy retail and media sites.
Each property version is activated on Akamai’s staging network first, usually within 3 minutes, then promoted to production.
Fast Purge removes cached objects across the edge in seconds, by URL, by CP code for a whole site, or by cache tag for related items.
SAN, wildcard and EV SAN certificates are offered, or you upload a third-party certificate, on a network Akamai describes as PCI DSS compliant.

Logged-in pages, carts and API calls cannot be cached, so they travel to your origin every time. Ion sends them over the Enhanced Akamai Protocol, with SureRoute picking the quickest path it has tested. The edge also prefetches a page’s embedded objects while the HTML is still on its way to the browser.
Adaptive Acceleration reads mPulse real-user timing and pushes the resources each page needs first. Akamai claims up to 5% faster start render. Adaptive Image Compression trims images for mobile users on slow links, and script controls limit how much third-party tags drag a page. All of this is set in rules at the edge, not in your code.
Every Ion property is versioned. A new version runs on the staging network, usually within 3 minutes, before it reaches production. Teams can manage properties through the API or Terraform, sign in to Control Center with SAML single sign-on, and purge content by URL, CP code or cache tag in seconds.
There is no public price, so budgeting waits for a quote. The Ion page lists no PoP count and no Indian edge cities. mPulse, EdgeWorkers and Image & Video Manager are separate catalogue products, and so is security: a WAF means buying App & API Protector. Akamai’s YouTube channel carries no Ion-named product video.
Split traffic into cacheable and uncacheable, and list the pages and APIs where seconds cost sales or sign-ins.
Agree hostnames, origins, expected traffic and add-ons such as mPulse, then get Ion quoted in INR with GST.
Create the Ion property, tune the Accelerate delivery and Minimize payload rules, and test it on the staging network.
Point one hostname at Akamai, activate on production, and compare its real-user timings with the old path.
Move the remaining hostnames, set purge routines by cache tag, and put the property into Terraform for change control.

“Our checkout API cannot be cached. SureRoute shaved the origin round trip enough that cart abandonment stopped rising at sale time.”
“Staging activation is the habit that saved us: a bad redirect rule showed up there, not in front of a million visitors.”
“Tag managers were our slowest page element. The script controls bought back time without arguing with marketing.”
“Mobile users on weak 4G got smaller images automatically. We never had to build and store a second set of renditions.”
“Property Manager has a learning curve. Rule order matters, and our first Terraform import needed a partner to untangle.”
“The delivery is excellent; the renewal quote is the hard part. Ask for the traffic tiers in writing before you sign.”

Drag the sliders (site and API hostnames; engineer-hour cost). Estimates model engineering time spent tuning caching, compressing images and chasing slow-page complaints at an assumed 1.5 hours per hostname a year, with 70% of it removed by edge rules and learned page tuning. Both figures are assumptions. Illustrative.
Loaded cost = salary + overheads per productive hour. Illustrative only — your TechBag quote models your actual environment and modules.
Not published: Akamai lists no Ion price and no licence unit, and offers a trial request form on the product page. mPulse real-user monitoring and EdgeWorkers are separate products. TechBag maps your cacheable and uncacheable traffic first, then gets the quote itemised in INR with GST.

Take this into your next vendor call — including ours.
What share of requests can be cached? Ion’s routing helps most where pages and APIs must reach the origin.
Where do your origins run, and can they accept connections from Akamai’s edge without other changes?
Do you have real-user data today? Adaptive Acceleration learns from mPulse, which is quoted on its own.
Where are your Indian visitors? Ask Akamai for edge locations serving them, as the Ion page lists none.
Will you add App & API Protector for a WAF, or keep a separate security vendor in front of the site?
Who edits rules, and will properties live in Terraform with staging tests before each production push?
Do you need custom logic at the edge? EdgeWorkers is a separate product with its own commercial terms.
Does the quote state traffic tiers, overage rates, the SLA credits and the term? Ask for INR with GST.
