Datto Backup for Microsoft Azure

Your servers now run in Azure. Their only backups shouldn’t sit in the same tenant — Datto Backup for Microsoft Azure keeps copies of your Azure VMs and file shares outside your own tenant — hourly to a Datto-owned Azure tenant, then to the Datto Cloud, so VMs can boot even when Azure is down.

Quick answer

Datto Backup for Microsoft Azure backs up Azure VMs and Azure Files to a Datto-owned Azure tenant, then replicates them every hour to the private Datto Cloud. If a VM fails you restore it in Azure; if Azure itself is down you boot it in the Datto Cloud. It is sold through MSPs at a flat fee Datto does not publish. Its mapping lists no Indian Azure region — Southeast Asia maps to Sydney. Read more ↓ Show less ↑

Understand cloud-workload DR before you buy it

Most product pages skip this. We start here — so you buy a capability, not a buzzword.

What is cloud-workload DR?

Cloud-workload DR keeps copies of cloud VMs somewhere a region, account or tenant failure cannot reach, and a place to run them.

Under the hood

The five pieces of the platform

Vendors love diagrams; buyers need to know what they’re actually operating. Here’s the whole platform, demystified.

01
How the data is captured

Agent

Datto agent in each VM

A Datto agent is push-installed into each Windows VM through the Azure VM agent; Windows Server 2012 R2 to 2025 and Windows 10/11 multi-session are supported.

02
Where the first copy lands

Tenant

Datto-owned Azure tenant

Backups land in-region in a Datto-owned Azure tenant, outside your own subscription, and fast restores back into Azure are served from this copy.

03
Where the second copy lives

Cloud

The Datto Cloud

Every hour the backups replicate to Datto’s private cloud on immutable storage, so a second provider holds a copy you can boot from if Azure is down.

04
Where you run it

Portal

Datto cloud portal

One portal runs backups, daily verification, alerts and reports; Kaseya’s April 2026 Unified Cyber Resilience Portal brings its other backup lines alongside.

An agent in each VM, a first copy in a Datto-owned Azure tenant — then an hourly second copy in the Datto Cloud, off Azure.

Part 03 · Evaluate

Nine capabilities. Protect, recover, prove.

Datto Backup for Microsoft Azure keeps your Azure VMs recoverable from outside your tenant — and outside Azure itself.

Protect
Hourly

Backups every hour

VMs are backed up as often as every hour, which Kaseya ties to a 60-minute recovery point objective — its own figure, not a guarantee.

Protect
Off-tenant

Copies outside your subscription

Restore points sit in a Datto-owned tenant, so someone holding your Azure admin credentials cannot reach them from your side.

Protect
Azure Files

File shares, not only VMs

Azure Files support went generally available in April 2026, and Kaseya’s product page now lists Blob containers as well.

Recover
In Azure

Restore back into Azure

Whole VMs, disks, files and folders come back into your subscription from the in-region copy held in the Datto tenant.

Recover
Datto Cloud

Boot outside Azure

If Azure itself is unavailable, VMs can be spun up in the Datto Cloud from the hourly replica, with no extra charge for DR.

Recover
Export

Virtualise first, then choose

A recovery point can be virtualised to check it, then turned into a file restore or exported as an image back to Azure.

Prove
Verification

Each VM booted daily

VMs are built and booted from existing backups every day as proof they recover; file backups are watched for anomalies.

Prove
Immutable

A copy nobody can alter

The Datto Cloud copy sits on immutable storage with anti-deletion safeguards and ransomware detection, Kaseya says.

Prove
Flat fee

No egress or test bills

One flat fee covers backup, transfer, restores and DR testing; Datto lists $0 egress, $0 DR and $0 DR testing on its datasheet.

Why Datto Backup for Microsoft Azure

Azure keeps your VMs running, not your backups safe from your own tenant. Datto keeps a copy outside it, and outside Azure.

Here’s what genuinely sets it apart — and exactly where it stops.

01

A copy that lives outside your tenant

Native Azure Backup keeps its vault inside the same subscription as the VMs it protects. Datto writes each backup to a Datto-owned Azure tenant instead, then copies it every hour to the private Datto Cloud — so stolen Azure admin credentials, or a tenant-wide mistake, do not also reach the restore points.

02

Somewhere to boot when Azure is down

Most Azure-native DR fails over to another Azure region, which does not help when the problem is Azure or your account. Datto can spin VMs up in Azure for everyday restores, or in the Datto Cloud when Azure is unavailable, and it charges nothing extra for the DR itself or for testing it.

03

Proof every day, and a bill that holds still

Each protected VM is built and booted from its backup every day, so a failed restore shows up before a disaster rather than during one. Pricing is one flat fee through an MSP with $0 egress; Datto claims that works out 30% below native Azure, and 30–50% on its datasheet — vendor claims to test.

04

Where it stops

Datto publishes no price and sells through MSPs, priced in US dollars. Its region mapping lists no Indian Azure region: Southeast Asia maps to Sydney. The help pages document Windows VMs and Azure Files, not Azure SQL, Cosmos DB or AKS, and cloud backups are kept only 30 days after the subscription ends.

What your Datto Backup for Microsoft Azure rollout looks like

Week 1Model

List VMs and file shares

Inventory each Azure VM, its operating system, disk size and region, plus the file shares — that list sets scope and the quote.

Week 2Decide

Settle the region question

Datto maps no Indian Azure region. Get in writing where copies of your VMs would sit, and check it against RBI or IRDAI duties.

Week 3Pilot

Pilot through an MSP

Push the agent to a few VMs, let the hourly backups and daily boot checks run, and restore one VM back into Azure.

Month 2Prove

Drill a failover

Boot the pilot VMs in the Datto Cloud as if Azure were down, then time DNS, network and user re-pointing end to end.

Month 3Commit

Commit and retire

Extend to the remaining VMs and shares, retire overlapping native policies, and diarise the 30-day exit window.

Which approach fits you?

Honest fit signals — because the fastest way to lose your trust is to pretend one product wins every scenario.

Choose Datto Backup for Microsoft Azure if…

  • ✓Your Azure VMs need a copy outside Microsoft’s cloud and somewhere to boot if Azure itself is down
  • ✓An MSP already runs your Datto or Kaseya stack, and a flat fee suits you better than a consumption bill
  • ✓You want every VM proven bootable each day, not just a job that reports success

Compare alternatives if…

  • ✓Backups must be stored in an Indian region — Azure Backup, Veeam and Commvault can keep them in Central or South India
  • ✓You need Azure SQL, Cosmos DB or AKS protected — Veeam and Commvault document those workloads
  • ✓You buy direct rather than through an MSP — Microsoft’s native tools need no partner at all

Do not expect…

  • ✓A published price, or any price in rupees
  • ✓An Indian Azure region in Datto’s mapping — Southeast Asia maps to Sydney
  • ✓An analyst placement — Datto sits in no Gartner Magic Quadrant

Do the math

What does hand-run Azure backup cost you?

Drag the sliders (Azure VMs and file shares protected; engineer-hour cost). Estimates model engineering time spent on backup policies, restore tests and reconciling variable backup bills, at an assumed 1.5 hours per protected VM or share a year, with 70% of it removed by automated daily verification and a flat fee. Three ways to consume it

Not published: Datto sells Backup for Microsoft Azure through MSPs as a flat fee — with per-VM billing as one option — and lists $0 egress, $0 DR and $0 DR testing. Datto claims 30% lower cost than native tools on its product page and 30–50% lower on its datasheet; both are vendor claims. For comparison, Microsoft lists Azure Backup at $10 a month per VM of 50–500 GB plus storage, and Site Recovery at $25 per VM a month. There is no INR price. TechBag lists your VMs and shares first, then prices it in INR with GST.

Datto Backup for Azure

Best for MSP-run Azure estates

  • Flat fee quoted through an MSP
  • $0 egress, DR and DR testing (vendor)
  • Per-VM billing caps each VM at 1 TB

+ Platform add-ons

Best for a broader rollout

  • Scoped to your estate
  • Add-on modules as needed
  • Phased, right-sized deployment

Native Azure, for comparison

Best for pay-as-you-go in-house IT

  • Azure Backup $10/VM a month + storage
  • Site Recovery $25 per VM a month
  • Vaults in Central, South or West India

The 8 questions to ask every vendor

Take this into your next vendor call — including ours.

1
Scope

Which VMs and file shares need protecting? Datto’s help pages document Windows VMs and Azure Files; ask the MSP about anything else.

2
Region

Where would each copy sit? The mapping lists no Indian Azure region, and Southeast Asia VMs map to Sydney.

3
Regulation

Do RBI, IRDAI or sector rules require backups stored in India? If so, get the storage location confirmed in writing.

4
Billing mode

Per-VM billing caps each VM at 1 TB of managed disk. Do any of your VMs exceed that, and how would they be billed?

5
Failover

When VMs boot in the Datto Cloud, how do users, DNS and VPNs reach them? Rehearse it rather than assume it.

6
Agent

Does every VM have the Azure VM agent? The Datto agent is pushed through it, and migrated servers often lack it.

7
Exit

Cloud backups are kept 30 days after the subscription ends. What must be exported, and by whom, before then?

8
Buying route

Which MSP will sell and run it, and will the invoice come in INR with GST rather than US dollars?
