Product-led, marketing-led or sales-led? Freshworks’ customer bands for the quarter to 30 June 2026, read for an Indian founder and an Indian buyer.
A software company that starts product-led rarely stays only product-led. Freshworks, founded in Chennai and sold for years on free tiers and self-serve plans, grew its accounts worth more than US$100,000 a year by 25% in the year to 30 June 2026, and its accounts worth more than US$5,000 by 6%.1 3 The question the 2023 version of this piece asked, which growth motion fits a business, has a sharper answer than it gave: the product finds the users, and a salesperson grows the revenue.
Product-led growth means the product closes: a user signs up, gets value without talking to anyone and pays by card. Marketing-led growth means content and campaigns bring the buyer to a trial or a demo. Sales-led growth means a person qualifies, quotes and negotiates. The 2023 post treated these as three strategies to choose between. In practice they are stages of one funnel, and the useful question is where in that funnel the money is made.
Freshworks reports customers by annual recurring revenue band rather than in total. In the quarter to 30 June 2026 it counted 25,356 customers above US$5,000, 4,091 above US$50,000 and 1,746 above US$100,000.1 2 Its chief executive described the company as having “built a platform for the mid-market and agile enterprise”, and Freddy AI Copilot was attached to more than 71% of new enterprise deals. Net dollar retention was 104%, down from 106% a year earlier.1
The larger the account, the faster it grew: US$100,000 accounts rose four times as fast as US$5,000 ones

The free tiers have not gone; TechBag’s Freshworks page still lists them on several products, and Freshsales’ Growth plan is US$9 a user a month on annual billing.3 4 They do a different job now: they fill the top of the funnel, and the accounts a sales team works are where the growth is. That is the hybrid the 2023 post’s three tidy categories did not describe.
A self-serve purchase from a foreign vendor is a card payment in US dollars, often without an Indian tax invoice; a registered business then pays 18% IGST itself under reverse charge on the imported service.5 A sales-led purchase through an Indian partner arrives as an INR quote with 18% GST on the invoice, room to negotiate, and a contract you can mark up. That last point matters more each year: the DPDP Rules were notified on 13 November 2025 and the substantive duties of a Data Fiduciary, including the processing contract with each vendor, apply from 13 May 2027.6 A click-through licence cannot be marked up; a quote can.
