Quick answer

BMC Helix CMDB is the configuration model underneath BMC Helix ITSM — configuration items and, far more importantly, the RELATIONSHIPS between them, so a change manager can see what a change will actually touch before approving it. The commercial fact buyers most often get wrong: IT IS BUNDLED. BMC’s own subscriber entitlements chart lists ‘Asset & Configuration Management (CMDB)’ as a line item in BOTH the Standard and Advanced editions of Helix Service Management, so third-party comparison articles describing the CMDB as a paid add-on are simply wrong — and at least one of those sources is a competing CMDB vendor with an obvious interest in the claim. Formerly BMC Atrium CMDB, it provides datasets (import, production and sandbox), NORMALISATION — which includes setting the impact relationships that define dependencies between CIs — RECONCILIATION across sources, and federated data. THE THING THAT IS NOT INCLUDED, and this is the single most expensive mistake in this product family: BMC Helix Discovery, the engine that populates the CMDB automatically, is a SEPARATE SKU with a Starter Bundle from $50,000, and it does not appear in the entitlements chart at all. A CMDB with nothing feeding it is maintained by hand, drifts out of date, and still gets used for change decisions anyway — which is worse than not having one, because it carries false authority. So the honest way to buy this: the configuration model comes with your platform licence; budget separately for what keeps it true. Read more ↓ Show less ↑

Under the hood

The five pieces of the platform

Vendors love diagrams; buyers need to know what they’re actually operating. Here’s the whole platform, demystified.

01
The record

Configuration Items

The things you manage

A CI is the most granular component that has to be managed to deliver a service — a server, an application, a licence certificate. The CMDB sources, stores and monitors the data about them. On its own this is an inventory; the next card is what makes it a model.

02
The point

Relationships & Impact

What touches what

The relationships between CIs are the reason a CMDB exists. Normalisation includes setting the impact relationships that define dependencies, so a change manager can see what a change will affect. Without this you have a list, and a list cannot answer the only question change management actually asks.

03
The safety

Datasets

Import, production, sandbox

Separate datasets for imported data, live production data and sandbox work, so a bad import does not contaminate the model everyone is making decisions from.

04
The plumbing

Reconciliation

Many sources, one truth

Several sources feed a real CMDB — discovery, imports, manual entry, integrations. Reconciliation decides which one wins for each attribute, which is what stops the model becoming a pile of contradictions.

05
The catch

⚠️ What feeds it

Discovery is separate

BMC Helix Discovery populates and updates the CMDB automatically and is a SEPARATE purchase from $50,000, absent from the platform entitlements chart. This card is here because it is the most common and most expensive omission in a BMC quote.

One telemetry fabric across endpoint, cloud, and network — threats correlated once, not chased console to console.

Part 03 · Evaluate

Twelve capabilities. Model, then assist.

A configuration model records what depends on what, so change impact is read rather than guessed — and it comes bundled with portfolio, and paired with the human firewall.

Why BMC Helix CMDB

A ticket records what broke. The configuration model predicts it.

What genuinely sets it apart — and the line item that decides whether it stays true.

01

It is bundled — and we will show you where that is written

BMC’s own subscriber entitlements chart lists ‘Asset & Configuration Management (CMDB)’ as a line item in BOTH Helix Service Management Standard and Advanced. This matters because a number of third-party comparison articles state the opposite, and at least one of them is published by a direct CMDB competitor. If a reseller tells you the CMDB is an add-on, ask them to point at BMC’s entitlements documentation.

02

Relationships, not just an inventory

Plenty of tools hold a list of assets. The CMDB earns its place by holding the relationships between them, because that is what answers the only question change management asks: what will this break? Normalisation in BMC Helix CMDB explicitly includes setting the impact relationships that define dependencies between CIs.

03

It decays without a feed, and a decaying CMDB is worse than none

This is the honest limitation and it is a commercial one, not a technical one. BMC Helix Discovery — the engine that populates and updates the model automatically — is a SEPARATE SKU starting at $50,000 and does not appear in the entitlements chart. Buy the platform without it and the model is maintained by hand. It drifts, and it still gets used for change decisions, because it carries the authority of being the system of record.

04

The India and deployment story is the platform’s

The CMDB inherits BMC Helix’s India data storage position — Oracle Cloud Infrastructure in Mumbai with backups in Hyderabad, both in-country — and its deployment choice, including a current containerised on-premises build. Storage only: BMC does not separately document processing location, and notes Watson features may move select data out of country.

What your BMC Helix CMDB evaluation looks like

Day 0Check

Confirm it is already in your quote

It should be — BMC’s entitlements chart lists it in both Standard and Advanced. If a quote prices the CMDB as an add-on, ask for the entitlements documentation.

Week 1Scope

Decide what a CI is for you

The most common failure is modelling everything. Decide which components genuinely need managing to deliver your named services, and start there.

Week 2Price

Quote Discovery in the same conversation

From $50,000 and absent from the entitlements chart. Price it now or accept manual maintenance and plan for drift.

Week 6Prove

Test one real change end to end

Take a change you have already made, and check whether the model would have predicted its impact correctly. That is the only meaningful acceptance test.

Which cybersecurity approach fits you?

Honest fit signals — because the fastest way to lose your trust is to pretend one product wins every scenario.

Use BMC Helix CMDB if…

  • You are buying or already run BMC Helix ITSM — it comes with the licence, so the question is not whether to have it
  • Change impact assessment is the outcome you actually want, not just a tidier asset list
  • You can fund BMC Helix Discovery alongside it, so the model stays accurate without manual upkeep
  • You need the India storage region or a current on-premises deployment

Budget differently if…

  • You cannot fund Discovery. The CMDB is free with the platform and will decay without a feed — be honest about who will maintain it by hand, and how long that will last

Look at a lighter tool if…

  • Your estate is small enough that relationships between components are still tractable in someone’s head. SysAid includes visual CI relationship mapping in its base licence and TechBag sells it

The 8 questions to ask every vendor

Take this into your next vendor call — including ours.

1
Is it in the quote

Is the CMDB shown as included rather than as a line item? BMC’s entitlements chart lists it in both Standard and Advanced.

2
The feed

Is BMC Helix Discovery quoted alongside it, from $50,000 — or is the plan manual maintenance?

3
Relationships

Has the vendor demonstrated impact analysis on YOUR estate, not a demo dataset?

4
India storage

Does the contract name the OCI Mumbai region with Hyderabad backups explicitly?

5
Processing

Has BMC answered in writing what happens to processing, which its documentation does not separately cover?

6
The Watson exception

Is BMC’s documented Watson caveat in your risk register?

7
Deployment

If on-premises: is new-customer availability confirmed in writing?
