This page covers BMC Helix ITSM — the platform. The rest of the family:
Most product pages skip this. We start here — so you buy a capability, not a buzzword.
An enterprise ITSM platform — incident, problem, change, request, knowledge and service level management — resolved against a configuration model that ships with the licence. Gartner named it a Leader in the 2026 Magic Quadrant for ITSM Platforms.
What consolidation actually replaces, dimension by dimension.
| Dimension | Without a configuration model | BMC Helix ITSM (SailPoint) |
|---|---|---|
| Change impact | Assessed from memory and a spreadsheet | Assessed from CI relationships in the CMDB |
| Asset and licence data | A parallel spreadsheet nobody trusts | Lifecycle and licence compliance against the same model |
| Where data sits | Wherever the SaaS vendor chose | OCI Mumbai, with backups in Hyderabad |
| Deployment choice | SaaS or nothing | SaaS or a current, containerised on-premises build |
| Keeping the model true | Manual updates that decay | Discovery — but budget it, it is a separate SKU |

Vendors love diagrams; buyers need to know what they’re actually operating. Here’s the whole platform, demystified.
The processes an auditor asks about, on one platform: incident, problem, change, release, request fulfilment, knowledge and service level management. Listed in the PinkVERIFY registry for 18 process areas. This is the part every ITSM tool claims; the difference is what it is resolved against — see the next card.
Configuration items and, more importantly, the relationships between them, so a change manager can see what a change will actually touch. Bundled with the platform licence in both Standard and Advanced editions — not an add-on, whatever third-party comparison articles say. Formerly BMC Atrium CMDB.
Tracks the whole asset lifecycle: procurement, contracts, financial costs, chargebacks and software licences. The Software Asset Management console and its License Engine install with Asset Management and query the CMDB directly, so licence compliance is calculated against the configuration model rather than a parallel spreadsheet.
Agentic chat, agentic search and HelixGPT Agent Studio shipping through releases 26.1 to 26.3. Judge this the way you would judge any vendor’s agentic claims — on deflection and auto-resolution rates in your own pilot, not on the demo, because that is where these numbers usually thin out.
Containerised on-premises with fresh-install documentation, receiving current releases eight days behind SaaS. In a category that has gone almost entirely SaaS-only, this is the reason regulated and air-gapped Indian estates shortlist BMC. Caveat worth confirming at quote stage: every entitlement SKU BMC publishes is marked SaaS, and BMC does not state publicly whether on-premises is sold to new customers.
One telemetry fabric across endpoint, cloud, and network — threats correlated once, not chased console to console.
Enterprise ITSM resolved against a configuration model that ships with the licence — and the one engine that keeps it true, which does not ship with portfolio, and paired with the human firewall.
Log, route, escalate and resolve — against the configuration model rather than against a free-text description of what someone thinks broke.
Root cause and known error, linked to the configuration items actually involved, so the fix outlives the person who worked it out.
Impact assessed from CI relationships BEFORE approval. This is the capability that justifies the platform — and the one that fails quietly if the CMDB is stale.
Catalogue-driven requests with approvals and fulfilment tasks, so routine asks stop arriving as emails to whoever answered last time.
Articles surfaced to agents, to self-service and now to agentic search — the same corpus feeding all three.
Targets, measurement and breach handling across services, reported rather than asserted.
Configuration items and their relationships. INCLUDED in the platform licence in both Standard and Advanced editions — not an add-on.
Procurement through retirement with contracts, costs and chargebacks attached to the same records the service desk resolves against.
The SAM console and its License Engine install with Asset Management and query the CMDB directly, so compliance is calculated against the model, not a parallel spreadsheet.
Datasets, normalisation and reconciliation keep the configuration model coherent when several sources feed it.
HelixGPT across the service desk and the self-service front door. Judge it on deflection in your own pilot, not on the demo.
Build your own agents against the platform's data and actions, rather than waiting for the vendor to ship the one you need.

BMC documents an India service location on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure in MUMBAI, with backups stored in HYDERABAD, both inside the country, and states data ‘remains within the same country for that service’. No other ITSM platform TechBag carries has this. But read it precisely: that is a STORAGE statement. TechBag claims nothing about where data is PROCESSED, because BMC does not document processing location separately — if your obligation names processing, get BMC to answer it in writing before you shortlist. And record the exception BMC itself documents: services using IBM Watson features may transfer select data outside the country.
BMC’s own subscriber entitlements chart lists ‘Asset & Configuration Management (CMDB)’ in BOTH Standard and Advanced, so third-party articles calling the CMDB a paid add-on are wrong — and at least one of those sources is a competing CMDB vendor. What is genuinely separate is BMC Helix Discovery, which does not appear in that chart at all and whose Starter Bundle begins at $50,000. Discovery is what populates the CMDB automatically. Buy the platform without it and the configuration model is maintained by hand, drifts, and still gets used for change decisions — which is worse than not having one.
Almost every platform in this category is SaaS-only. BMC is not: the modern on-premises build is containerised, has fresh-install documentation rather than upgrade-only notes, and receives current releases — 26.2.01 reached SaaS on 29 May 2026 and on-premises on 8 June 2026, eight days apart, and 26.3 added further on-premises products. The confusion to avoid is with Remedy, the legacy line that BMC positions Helix ITSM as superseding. One caveat to settle at quote stage: every entitlement SKU BMC publishes is marked SaaS, and BMC does not state publicly whether on-premises is sold to new customers.
On 17 June 2026 Montagu agreed to acquire a MAJORITY stake in BMC Helix in a carve-out from KKR-owned BMC Software, with KKR retaining BMC and a minority of Helix. The transaction has NOT closed — BMC’s own release says it ‘remains subject to receipt of regulatory approvals’ and no closing date is disclosed. A three-year agreement is therefore signed with a business whose majority owner is still changing, and roadmap, support structure and pricing posture can all move after a carve-out completes. Ali Siddiqui is CEO of BMC Helix; Ayman Sayed leads BMC Software.
Does it name data STORAGE or data PROCESSING? BMC documents the storage region — OCI Mumbai with backups in Hyderabad. It does not separately document processing, so if that is what your auditor means, get it answered in writing before you shortlist rather than after.
On-premises here is current and containerised, not the legacy Remedy line. But every published SKU is marked SaaS, so confirm new-customer availability and the on-premises licensing terms explicitly at quote stage.
The CMDB is included; the engine that keeps it accurate is a separate SKU from $50,000. Price the outcome you actually want — a configuration model that stays true — rather than the line item that sounds cheaper.
This is the heaviest platform in the category. Implementation is a programme, not a configuration exercise. If that does not fit your timeline or budget, say so now — TechBag also sells Freshservice and ManageEngine and will tell you when they fit better.
Montagu agreed a majority stake on 17 June 2026, pending regulatory approval with no disclosed closing date. Ask how support structure, roadmap commitments and renewal pricing are protected across the close — and get the answer into the contract.

“The configuration model is the reason we chose it — change impact stopped being guesswork.”
“Budget Discovery from day one. The CMDB is included in the licence; keeping it accurate is not.”
“On-premises was non-negotiable for us, and this was one of very few current platforms that still offered it properly.”
Analyst firms bury this view behind paywalls, and G2 retired its Grid. So here’s TechBag’s synthesis of the ITSM platform market — tap any vendor to see why it sits where it does.
Execution strength vs product vision — the classic market map, minus the paywall.
MQ Leader 2026. India storage. On-prem current.
The grid nobody publishes — platform capability vs how much of it you get without buying a second SKU.
CMDB and asset management bundled into the licence.

ServiceNow, Ivanti, Freshservice and ManageEngine — honest lanes. BMC’s edge is specific rather than general: India data storage and a current on-premises option. If neither constrains you, this becomes a straight capability-and-price conversation, and TechBag sells all of them.
| Dimension | BMC Helix ITSM | ServiceNow | Ivanti Neurons | Freshservice | ManageEngine SDP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| India data storage region | OCI Mumbai, backups Hyderabad — documented | No India storage region documented | US / Australia / Germany for ITSM — not India | India-built; India hosting available | India-built; on-prem keeps data wherever you put it |
| On-premises deployment | Current, containerised, patched 8 days behind SaaS | SaaS only | Cloud, on-prem or hybrid | SaaS only | On-prem or cloud |
| CMDB in the base licence | Included in Standard AND Advanced | Deep, but discovery and CMDB licensed separately | Included across all three packages | Present, lighter than enterprise platforms | Included |
| Discovery to keep it accurate | SEPARATE SKU — Starter Bundle from $50,000 | Separately licensed | Asset Discovery a line item in all packages | Discovery included at higher tiers | Included |
| Published pricing | Quote-only — no rate card | Quote-only | Quote-only | Published per-agent tiers | Published tiers |
| Right weight below ~500 seats | Usually overkill — we will say so | Overkill and expensive at that size | Workable, still enterprise-shaped | Designed for this | Strong value at mid-market scale |
Honest fit signals — because the fastest way to lose your trust is to pretend one product wins every scenario.
BMC Helix ITSM is one of 14 itsm & service desk products TechBag carries. The ITSM & Service Desk guide narrows them to a shortlist and shows the reasoning. →
Drag the sliders (count IT staff; loaded hourly cost). Estimates assume time currently lost to assessing change impact by hand and reconciling asset data across spreadsheets. The larger, unpriced win is avoided change-related incidents — which is exactly what an accurate configuration model is for. Illustrative.
Loaded cost = salary + overheads per productive hour. Illustrative only — your TechBag quote models your actual environment and modules.
QUOTE-ONLY. BMC publishes no rate card for Helix ITSM, and the per-agent figures on third-party blogs are not vendor-sourced — one of those sources is a direct CMDB competitor, so we do not repeat them.
Best when the configuration model matters
Best for a broader rollout
Best priced before you sign, not after

Does the contract name the India service location — OCI Mumbai with backups in Hyderabad — explicitly, rather than referring to it in a sales deck?
Has BMC confirmed IN WRITING what happens to data processing, which its documentation does not separately cover?
Is BMC’s own documented exception — services using IBM Watson features may transfer select data outside the country — recorded in your risk register?
Is BMC Helix Discovery quoted alongside the platform, or is the plan to maintain the CMDB by hand? Its Starter Bundle begins at $50,000.
If you need on-premises: is new-customer availability confirmed, and are the licensing terms in writing? Every published SKU is marked SaaS.
Are you buying BMC Helix Service Management or BMC Helix ITSM? You cannot have both within the same subscription.
How are support structure, roadmap and renewal pricing protected across the Montagu close, which has no disclosed date?
At your seat count, is this genuinely the right weight of platform — or is a lighter tool the honest answer?
TechBag will price the platform, Discovery and the implementation together rather than one of the three — and will tell you plainly if your seat count says a lighter tool is the better answer.
