Quick answer

BMC Helix Discovery scans your estate and populates the BMC Helix CMDB automatically — and it is the one product in this family with a VENDOR-PUBLISHED PRICE: the Discovery Starter Bundle begins at $50,000, with a Discovery Enterprise tier quoted individually. That price is on this page rather than buried, because Discovery is the single most commonly omitted line in a BMC quote and its omission quietly undermines everything else you bought. Here is why it matters. The CMDB IS bundled with the BMC Helix platform licence — BMC’s own entitlements chart lists ‘Asset & Configuration Management (CMDB)’ in both Standard and Advanced editions. Discovery is NOT in that chart at all. So a buyer can quite reasonably conclude they have bought a working configuration model, and then discover that nothing feeds it. A CMDB with no automatic discovery is maintained by hand: it drifts, and — this is the expensive part — it still gets used for change-impact decisions, because it is the system of record and carries that authority. A wrong model that people trust is worse than no model at all. What Discovery actually does: automatic scanning of hardware, software and services; dependency mapping so the relationships in the CMDB reflect reality rather than someone’s recollection; and the Discovery Outpost for reaching segmented or remote parts of an estate. THE HONEST POSITION: Discovery is not technically mandatory — the CMDB also accepts imports, integrations and manual entry — but in any estate large enough to justify BMC Helix in the first place, hand-maintenance is not a real plan. TechBag prices Discovery alongside the platform rather than after it, so you are quoted the outcome you actually want. Read more ↓ Show less ↑

What is BMC Helix Discovery?

Automatic scanning and dependency mapping that populates the BMC Helix CMDB. It is the mechanism that keeps the configuration model matching the estate.

Under the hood

The five pieces of the platform

Vendors love diagrams; buyers need to know what they’re actually operating. Here’s the whole platform, demystified.

01
The input

Automatic Scanning

Find what is actually there

Scans the estate for hardware, software and services and records what it finds. The value is not the inventory itself — it is that the inventory is produced by a machine on a schedule rather than by a person when they remember.

02
The point

Dependency Mapping

How it all connects

Maps the relationships between what it discovers, so the CMDB’s model of what depends on what reflects the estate rather than an architecture diagram drawn two years ago.

03
The delivery

CMDB Population

Straight into the model

Feeds discovered data directly into BMC Helix CMDB. This is the whole reason the product exists: the CMDB is bundled, but it is only as accurate as what feeds it.

04
The coverage

Discovery Outpost

Reach the awkward places

Extends scanning into segmented networks, remote sites and parts of the estate the main scanner cannot reach directly — which in most real Indian enterprise estates is a meaningful fraction of it.

05
The catch

⚠️ The commercial shape

A separate five-figure SKU

Starter Bundle from $50,000, Enterprise quoted individually, and absent from the platform entitlements chart. This card exists because the omission is the most expensive mistake in this product family.

One telemetry fabric across endpoint, cloud, and network — threats correlated once, not chased console to console.

Part 03 · Evaluate

Twelve capabilities. Scan, map, feed.

Automatic scanning and dependency mapping is what stops a configuration model decaying — and unlike the CMDB it is not bundled with portfolio, and paired with the human firewall.

Why BMC Helix Discovery

A ticket records what broke. The configuration model predicts it.

Why this page leads with the price — and what happens if you skip it.

01

It is the line item most often missing from a BMC quote

The CMDB is bundled into the platform licence — BMC’s own entitlements chart lists it in both Standard and Advanced. Discovery is not in that chart at all. The result is a buyer who reasonably believes they have bought a working configuration model, and only later finds that nothing populates it. We put the $50,000 entry price in the headline rather than the footnotes for exactly that reason.

02

A hand-maintained CMDB does not stay empty — it goes wrong

This is the failure mode worth understanding. Without automatic discovery the model is updated by people, between other work. It does not sit unused; it gets consulted for change-impact decisions because it is the system of record. So the risk is not an empty database, it is a confidently wrong one. That is a worse position than having no CMDB, where at least nobody pretends to know.

03

Dependency mapping is the part you cannot reproduce by hand

An inventory can, at a push, be assembled manually. The relationships between components cannot — not at enterprise scale, and not kept current. Since relationships are the entire reason a CMDB exists rather than a spreadsheet, discovery is what makes the configuration model worth having.

04

It is genuinely optional — and we will say when

Discovery is not technically required: the CMDB accepts imports, integrations and manual entry. In a small, stable, well-documented estate that can be enough. But if your estate is large enough to justify BMC Helix at all, be honest about whether anyone is funded to maintain the model by hand indefinitely. Usually the honest answer is no.

What your BMC Helix Discovery evaluation looks like

Day 0Check

Look for it in the quote

The CMDB will be included. Discovery will not be. If it is absent, that is not an oversight to fix later — it changes what you are buying.

Week 1Scope

Map what needs reaching

Segmented networks, remote sites, cloud estates. This determines whether Discovery Outpost is needed and how many.

Week 2Prepare

Sort credentials before the pilot

Scanning needs credentials to see anything useful. Decide scope and vaulting deliberately — this is where discovery pilots usually stall.

Week 6Prove

Check the dependency map against reality

Take a service you understand well and see whether the discovered dependencies match. That is the acceptance test that matters.

OngoingWatch

Report coverage, not just findings

What has NOT been discovered is the more useful number. Blind spots are where a confident, wrong model comes from.

Which cybersecurity approach fits you?

Honest fit signals — because the fastest way to lose your trust is to pretend one product wins every scenario.

Buy BMC Helix Discovery if…

  • You are buying or already run BMC Helix and want the bundled CMDB to actually stay accurate
  • Your estate is large or changes often enough that manual model maintenance is not credible
  • Change-impact assessment is the outcome you are paying the platform for
  • You have segmented or remote sites that need the Discovery Outpost to reach

Defer it if…

  • Your estate is small, stable and genuinely well documented, and imports plus manual entry will hold. Be honest about whether that will still be true in two years

Reconsider the platform if…

  • You cannot fund Discovery and cannot staff manual upkeep. That combination means buying a configuration model you will not be able to trust — a lighter service desk is the more honest purchase, and TechBag sells several

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

The Discovery Starter Bundle begins at $50,000, published on BMC’s own product page. A Discovery Enterprise tier exists and is quoted individually — no public figure. This is the ONLY product in the BMC Helix family with a vendor-published price, which is why we state it plainly. Every per-agent figure you may see quoted for BMC Helix ITSM itself is third-party and not vendor-sourced.

Price Discovery with the platform, not after it

TechBag quotes BMC Helix Discovery alongside the platform licence, because a CMDB with nothing feeding it is not the outcome you were buying. If your estate genuinely does not need it, we will say so.

Stats, ratings, review counts and pricing are illustrative and sourced from public materials; verify before purchase.
