Citrix DaaS

Your apps live in a data centre and two clouds. Your users shouldn’t need to know which — Citrix DaaS streams Windows and Linux apps and full desktops over HDX from Azure, AWS, Google Cloud or your own data centre, with the control plane run by Citrix or by you.

Quick answer

Citrix DaaS publishes Windows and Linux apps and full desktops over HDX. It comes in two halves: DaaS Cloud, where Citrix runs the control plane, and DaaS Local, formerly Virtual Apps and Desktops, which you run yourself. Workloads sit on Azure, AWS, Google Cloud or your own servers. There is no list price; it is quoted inside a Citrix subscription. Citrix Cloud has no India region, but your desktops can. Understand virtual apps and desktops before you buy them

Most product pages skip this. We start here — so you buy a capability, not a buzzword.

What are virtual apps and desktops?

Apps and desktops run on servers you control, and only the screen travels to the user’s device.

Apps installed on every laptop vs Citrix DaaS — the honest table

What consolidation actually replaces, dimension by dimension.

The cheapest test is one branch: publish its five most-used apps from a single image and compare logon times and tickets for a month.

Under the hood

The five pieces of the platform

Vendors love diagrams; buyers need to know what they’re actually operating. Here’s the whole platform, demystified.

01
Where brokering and policy live

Control plane

DaaS Cloud or DaaS Local

DaaS Cloud keeps the control plane on Citrix Cloud, in a US, EU or APS region picked once; DaaS Local puts it on your servers, on Current Release or LTSR builds.

02
Where apps and desktops actually run

Workloads

Session machines in any cloud or site

Machines built with Machine Creation Services or Provisioning Services run on Azure, Google Cloud, AWS or on-premises hypervisors, and one site can mix them.

03
How the screen reaches the user

HDX

HDX protocol and Citrix Workspace app

HDX carries the session to the free Citrix Workspace app on the user’s device; NetScaler Gateway can act as the ICA proxy that fronts sessions from outside.

04
What shapes and guards each session

Environment

WEM, App Protection, recording

Workspace Environment Management tunes logons and profiles, App Protection guards the session window, and session recording keeps a replayable record for audits.

A control plane on Citrix Cloud or your own servers — session machines in any cloud or data centre, streamed over HDX.

Part 03 · Evaluate

Nine capabilities. Deliver, manage, protect.

Citrix DaaS runs apps and desktops on servers you choose and sends only the screen to the user.

Deliver
Apps

Published Windows and Linux apps

Individual Windows or Linux applications stream to any device, so users run them without a full remote desktop.

Deliver
Desktops

Shared, personal and Mac

Multi-session desktops pack many users onto one machine; single-session ones give each user their own, macOS included.

Deliver
Remote PC

Reach the PC on the desk

Remote PC Access lets staff connect to their own physical office machine through the same Workspace app and policies.

Manage
Provisioning

One image, many machines

Machine Creation Services and Provisioning Services build session machines from a master image, so a patch lands once.

Manage
WEM

Faster, steadier logons

Workspace Environment Management assigns apps and resources, throttles CPU, RAM and I/O hogs, and defers work until after logon.

Manage
Windows 365

Citrix on Cloud PCs

UHMC entitles you to enhance Windows 365 Cloud PCs, so Citrix policies and HDX can be layered onto Microsoft’s per-user PCs.

Protect
App Protection

Guard the session window

App Protection blocks keylogging and screen capture on the endpoint while a protected app or desktop window is in use.

Protect
Recording

Replay what happened

Session recording captures sessions you choose so audit, fraud and support teams can replay exactly what a user did.

Protect
Gateway

One front door, patched

NetScaler Gateway proxies HDX traffic from the internet; the September 2026 zero-days need build 14.1-73.37 or 13.1-64.23 at minimum.

Why Citrix DaaS

Desktops end up split across clouds and a data centre. Citrix DaaS brokers all of them from one place.

Here’s what genuinely sets it apart — and exactly where it stops.

01

One control plane over every cloud and your data centre

Citrix DaaS brokers session machines on Azure, Google Cloud, AWS and on-premises hypervisors from one place, so core apps can stay in your data centre while branch desktops run in a public cloud. By Citrix’s account, Gartner ranked it first in all five use cases of its 2025 DaaS Critical Capabilities.

02

Run the control plane yourself, or let Citrix run it

DaaS Local, once called Virtual Apps and Desktops, keeps every component on your servers, with LTSR builds supported for years: 2607 LTSR runs to August 2029. DaaS Cloud hands brokering to Citrix instead. Both come under the same subscription, so a site can move between them.

03

Proven at Indian insurance scale

Axis Max Life Insurance moved 20,000 users onto Citrix DaaS ahead of schedule, after a mid-2024 pilot of 50 users in 3 branches with partner Umbrella Tech. Citrix reports 25% lower cost and 80% less downtime; the insurer says no data leaves its data centre and MFA is on by default.

04

Where it stops

DaaS is not sold alone and has no public price, and buyer reports describe steep renewal rises, so get the renewal quote in writing. Citrix Cloud has no India region. Licences activate through the License Activation Service since 15 April 2026, and a NetScaler Gateway in front must stay patched.

What your Citrix DaaS rollout looks like

Week 1Model

Sort users by how they work

Group staff into task, knowledge and power users, list their apps, and decide published apps or full desktops for each.

Week 2Decide

Pick Cloud or Local, and a host

Choose DaaS Cloud or DaaS Local, then the cloud region or data centre in India where the session machines will run.

Week 3Pilot

Build one image and one group

Create a master image, provision a machine catalog with MCS or PVS, and publish a handful of apps to a pilot branch.

Month 2Prove

Measure the pilot honestly

Track logon times, HDX experience on branch links and support tickets for the pilot users, then fix policies in WEM.

Month 3Commit

Roll out branch by branch

Extend in waves, add App Protection and recording where required, and confirm the Gateway build before go-live.

Which approach fits you?

Honest fit signals — because the fastest way to lose your trust is to pretend one product wins every scenario.

Choose Citrix DaaS if…

  • ✓Your desktops must span your own data centre and more than one public cloud, under one control plane
  • ✓You need App Protection, session recording and long-supported LTSR builds for audited, regulated work
  • ✓You will also use other parts of the subscription, such as NetScaler, SecurAccess ZTNA or Endpoint Management

Compare alternatives if…

  • ✓You want a price you can read up front — Windows 365 Business lists $36 a user, and Parallels RAS offers a free 50-user trial
  • ✓Everything already runs in one cloud — Azure Virtual Desktop or Amazon WorkSpaces avoid a second vendor
  • ✓You run vSphere today and want Blast and App Volumes — Omnissa Horizon is the like-for-like move

Do not expect…

  • ✓DaaS as a separate line item, or a published per-user rate
  • ✓A Citrix Cloud control plane hosted in India
  • ✓File-based licences to keep working: activation moved to LAS in April 2026

Drag the sliders (users on virtual apps or desktops; IT staff-hour cost). Estimates model the IT time spent building, patching and fixing apps on each user’s own device, at an assumed 1.5 hours per user a year, with 70% of it removed by serving apps from one managed image. Three ways to consume it

Quote only. Citrix publishes no price for any current offering, and DaaS is not sold on its own: it is licensed per user inside Universal Hybrid Multi-Cloud, the Citrix Platform licence, Platform Flex credits or Citrix for Private Cloud. The per-user edition prices on review sites are legacy SKUs. Buyer reports describe steep rises at renewal, so get the renewal quote in writing. TechBag sizes the subscription and quotes in INR with GST.

Universal Hybrid Multi-Cloud

Best for hybrid estates that want DaaS plus NetScaler

  • DaaS Cloud and DaaS Local, per user
  • Bundles NetScaler, ZTNA, XenServer and more
  • Quoted; no published list price

+ Platform add-ons

Best for a broader rollout

  • Scoped to your estate
  • Add-on modules as needed
  • Phased, right-sized deployment

Citrix Platform licence

Best for estates using the whole platform

  • Everything in UHMC, per user
  • Adds SecurAccess with Chrome Enterprise and SecurSpaces
  • Unlimited ZTNA and Endpoint Management; quoted

FAQ

Questions buyers ask

Citrix DaaS is Citrix’s product for delivering virtual apps and desktops. Applications and desktops run on session machines in a cloud or your data centre, and the HDX protocol carries the screen to the free Citrix Workspace app on any device, so data stays on the servers.
