Most of your desktops only open Citrix. They shouldn’t need a full Windows build to do it — Citrix UniconOS turns thin clients and older PCs into write-protected, encrypted Linux endpoints for Citrix, managed from UniconOS Management and able to dual-boot beside Windows.

This page covers Citrix UniconOS — formerly eLux, with UniconOS Management, formerly Scout. The rest:
Most product pages skip this. We start here — so you buy a capability, not a buzzword.
A small, locked operating system whose only job is to open a user’s virtual apps and desktops.
What consolidation actually replaces, dimension by dimension.
| Dimension | A full Windows build on every device | Citrix UniconOS |
|---|---|---|
| What the device runs | A full Windows build, patched monthly | A write-protected Linux image that opens Citrix |
| When a laptop goes missing | Whatever was saved to its disk | An encrypted disk with nothing of note on it |
| Old hardware | Replaced when Windows outgrows it | Kept in service as a locked Citrix endpoint |
| Windows will not boot | A ticket and a desk visit | Restart into UniconOS and keep working |
| Fleet changes | Imaging tools and logon scripts | Settings pushed from UniconOS Management |
| What it is NOT | — | A general desktop OS, a separate SKU, or broker-neutral by design |
The cheapest test is ten spare PCs: convert them to UniconOS, break Windows on one dual-boot machine, and time how fast its user is back on Citrix.
Vendors love diagrams; buyers need to know what they’re actually operating. Here’s the whole platform, demystified.
UniconOS goes onto purpose-built thin clients or onto existing PCs, which can keep Windows on a second boot entry so one machine carries both systems.
A lightweight Linux image that users cannot write to, sealed with full disk encryption, TPM 2.0 and secure boot, so the endpoint stays in its approved state.
UniconOS Management sets images, settings and updates for every endpoint; a cloud edition, demonstrated in May 2026, is meant for managing large fleets.
Citrix designs the OS for its own environments, so the endpoint’s job is to bring up DaaS apps and desktops while the data stays on the servers.
A write-protected Linux image on thin clients or PCs — set from UniconOS Management, opening only Citrix sessions.
Citrix UniconOS locks the device down to one job: opening the user’s Citrix apps and desktops.
The system is write-protected, so there is little on the device for a user, an installer or malware to alter or keep.
Full disk encryption, TPM 2.0 and secure boot protect the disk if a device is lost and stop a tampered image starting.
UniconOS Management, once Scout, pushes images, settings and updates to every endpoint, with a cloud edition for scale.
Existing PCs can run UniconOS instead of a full Windows build, so hardware stays in service as a locked Citrix endpoint.
A PC can boot UniconOS from a second entry when Windows fails, so its user reaches Citrix while Windows is repaired.
Citrix has demonstrated Imprivata Fast User Switching on the OS, for stations several staff share through a shift.

UniconOS is write-protected Linux, so users cannot install software or change the system, and Citrix adds full disk encryption, TPM 2.0 and secure boot. For a device whose only job is to open Citrix sessions, that removes most of what a Windows endpoint needs patching, imaging and policing for.
Universal Hybrid Multi-Cloud and the Citrix Platform licence both include UniconOS without a device cap, so a customer on either can test it on spare hardware with no new contract. Citrix claims it can reduce IT costs by over 35%; treat that as the vendor’s figure and measure your own.
With dual boot, a Windows PC carries UniconOS on a second boot entry. If Windows will not start after a bad update or an incident, the user restarts into UniconOS and reaches their Citrix desktop while IT repairs the Windows side. BWO Systems, a Swiss IT provider, is a named Citrix customer story.
You cannot buy UniconOS on its own, and Citrix publishes no price for the subscriptions that carry it. Citrix positions it for Citrix environments, so test any other broker before relying on it. No Indian customer is named, and the hosting region of the cloud console is not published.
Check whether your contract is UHMC or the Citrix Platform licence, and list the endpoints whose only job is Citrix.
Sort devices into thin clients, PCs to repurpose and PCs to dual-boot, and note which need badge sign-in.
Set up UniconOS Management, create a write-protected image with encryption and secure boot, and enrol ten devices.
Break Windows on a dual-boot pilot PC on purpose, time the switch to UniconOS, and log every ticket the pilot raises.
Extend site by site, retire the old Windows images on converted devices, and record the hours IT stops spending.

“We put UniconOS on 300 ageing branch desktops. They boot straight into Citrix now, and their Windows patch queue simply went away.”
“A bad Windows update took out the front office one Monday. Staff rebooted into UniconOS and were on Citrix again in minutes.”
“Ward staff tap a badge and the shared station switches user through Imprivata, so handover no longer means a full logoff.”
“It sat in our UHMC entitlement for a year before anyone noticed. Read your Citrix contract before you price thin-client software.”
“Encrypted disks and secure boot on every counter terminal closed an audit point we had carried through two review cycles.”
“It is built around Citrix sessions, so the few users on our other VDI platform stayed on their old clients for now.”

Execution strength vs product vision — the classic market map, minus the paywall.
Included without a device cap in UHMC and the Citrix Platform.
The grid nobody publishes — how many kinds of device the OS can run on vs how far it locks each one down.
Thin clients, PCs, dual boot; encrypted, TPM 2.0, secure boot.

Drag the sliders (endpoints that mainly open Citrix; IT staff-hour cost). Estimates model the IT time spent patching, re-imaging and recovering a full Windows build on each endpoint, at an assumed 1.5 hours per endpoint a year, with 70% of it removed by a write-protected, centrally managed OS. Both figures are assumptions. Illustrative.
Loaded cost = salary + overheads per productive hour. Illustrative only — your TechBag quote models your actual environment and modules.
Included, not sold. UniconOS is an unlimited entitlement in Universal Hybrid Multi-Cloud and the Citrix Platform licence, both licensed per user, and Citrix publishes no list price for either; it is not offered as a product of its own. If you already hold one of those subscriptions, the OS costs nothing extra. TechBag confirms the entitlement in your contract and quotes any new subscription in INR with GST.
