The VDI renewal is due. The hypervisor under it costs more than it did — Omnissa Horizon 8 is VDI you run yourself: brokers, agents and gateways on vSphere, Nutanix AHV, OpenStack, OpenShift or public cloud, with App Volumes app layering and Omnissa DEM policies in the right editions — quoted per concurrent or named user.

This page covers Omnissa Horizon 8 — with App Volumes, Omnissa DEM, Omnissa Monitor and Horizon Accelerator folded in. The rest:
Most product pages skip this. We start here — so you buy a capability, not a buzzword.
VDI you run yourself: Windows and Linux desktops and published apps, brokered from your own servers.
What consolidation actually replaces, dimension by dimension.
| Dimension | Physical PCs and roaming profiles | Omnissa Horizon 8 |
|---|---|---|
| Golden images | One image per department | A few images, apps attached by App Volumes |
| User settings | Roaming profiles that break | Omnissa DEM settings and Smart Policies |
| Remote staff | VPN onto every laptop | Unified Access Gateway in front of desktops |
| Company data | Files on laptops that get lost | Kept in your data centre or cloud account |
| Hypervisor | Locked to whatever you bought | vSphere, AHV, OpenStack, OpenShift or cloud |
| What it is NOT | — | A service Omnissa hosts for you, or a priced SKU |
The cheapest test is one instant-clone pool for one team, with its apps on App Volumes: compare logon time and image count with what you run today.
Vendors love diagrams; buyers need to know what they’re actually operating. Here’s the whole platform, demystified.
Checks each user against Active Directory, reads their entitlements and hands them the right desktop or app; it sets the session up but stays out of the display traffic.
The agent sits on virtual desktops, RDSH servers or physical PCs; instant or full clones build pools on vSphere, AHV, OpenStack, OpenShift or public-cloud capacity.
Placed at the network edge for remote users, it passes sign-in to the Connection Server and proxies Blast, PCoIP or RDP, so no agent is ever exposed to the internet.
App Volumes attaches apps to desktops in real time, DEM applies profiles and Smart Policies, and Omnissa Monitor shows infrastructure health and baseline session performance.
Your servers broker and host every session, the gateway faces the internet, and App Volumes and DEM keep the image count low — nothing runs in Omnissa’s cloud unless you buy a SaaS edition.
Horizon 8 puts Windows and Linux desktops on infrastructure you choose and run, then layers apps and policies on top.
Blast Extreme carries graphics, calls and video over unreliable links, with optimised Teams, Zoom and Webex; PCoIP and RDP stay available.
Windows VDI in Standard and Enterprise Term, Linux VDI in Horizon for Linux and Enterprise, and remote access to physical PCs.
RDSH session desktops and published apps, VM-hosted apps and Linux-hosted apps, each depending on the edition you license.
Package an app once and attach it at sign-in or on demand, so fewer golden images; it also serves physical Windows PCs, AVD and Citrix.
Omnissa DEM carries user settings between sessions and applies Smart Policies by user, group or context; it does not manage the whole profile.
Instant and full clones build non-persistent pools fast, and Cloud Pod Architecture adds global entitlements across sites.
Desktops and files stay in your data centre or cloud, and clipboard, printing, USB and device redirection follow policy per group.
Desktop and app sessions can be recorded and replayed for audits and investigations, and a help desk tool shows live session detail.
Active Directory plus Omnissa Access brings multi-factor sign-in and True SSO, so the desktop opens without a second password prompt.
Three videos from Omnissa’s official channel: a Horizon 8 demo and an App Volumes demo from 2025, and an October 2026 video on Omnissa Monitor.
A 1:38 demo of building and managing Horizon 8 desktop pools from the console, published by Omnissa in August 2025.
A 2:30 App Volumes demo: package an application once, then attach and update it across Horizon desktops.

Horizon 8 does not need vSphere any more. Omnissa lists Nutanix AHV, OpenStack and Red Hat OpenShift for on-premises hosts, and Azure, AWS and Google Cloud in its FAQ, with Oracle and Alibaba on its deployment list. Apps Advanced and Enterprise Term allow hybrid, multi-cloud pools; Standard Term stays on one cloud.
Apps Advanced and Enterprise Term include App Volumes, which attaches packaged apps to desktops in real time, and DEM Enterprise for profiles and Smart Policies. Fewer golden images means fewer rebuilds after every patch cycle. Omnissa Monitor, introduced for on-premises Horizon 8 in July 2026, adds health and session views.
You run the brokers, agents and gateway, so a data centre or cloud region in India keeps desktops, profiles and session logs in the country. Omnissa lists air-gapped and isolated networks as a use case, and CERT-In’s 180-day log retention becomes a question of your own storage, not a vendor’s cloud.
There is no list price: every Term edition is quoted per concurrent or named user. You buy, run and patch the servers, storage and hypervisor. Term editions bundle VMware vSphere Foundation for VDI, a Broadcom product, which deepens vSphere ties if you use it. Standard Term is single-cloud, concurrent-only and Windows-only.
Count peak concurrent sessions against named users, list GPU and Linux needs, and mark which apps could move into App Volumes.
Choose the Term edition and the platform: vSphere, Nutanix AHV, OpenStack, OpenShift or an Indian cloud region, then size hosts.
Build an instant-clone pool for one team, attach its apps with App Volumes, set DEM policies and put a gateway in front of it.
Watch session health in Omnissa Monitor, switch on recording where auditors want it, and test failover with Cloud Pod Architecture.
Move the remaining users in waves, decide on Horizon Accelerator for Day-2 help, then settle the INR quote with GST through TechBag.

“Instant clones let us refresh 800 branch desktops overnight, and Blast copes with the patchy links our smaller branches still have.”
“App Volumes cut our golden images from eleven to two. Patch week used to mean three days of rebuilds; now it takes an afternoon.”
“We moved the hosts from vSphere to Nutanix AHV and users noticed nothing, which mattered to us more than any new feature.”
“Our formulation team needs GPU desktops. vGPU pools work well, though sizing them took a few rounds with the partner.”
“No list price meant three rounds of quotes to compare concurrent and named users, and the servers underneath are still our cost.”
“Session recording settled an audit query in a day; the auditors wanted to see exactly what a contractor did on a desktop.”
Analyst firms bury this view behind paywalls, and review-site grids score satisfaction, not fit for your estate. So here’s TechBag’s synthesis of the VDI and published-apps market — tap any vendor to see why it sits where it does.
Execution strength vs product vision — the classic market map, minus the paywall.
Quote-only per CCU or named user; Omnissa is a 2026 DaaS MQ Leader.
The grid nobody publishes — how many places you can run the desktops vs how much the product does once they run: layering, profiles, recording and protocols.
Four on-prem platforms plus clouds; App Volumes, DEM, recording.

Drag the sliders (desktops you manage; IT-hour cost). Estimates model the IT time spent imaging, patching and fixing physical PCs and their apps, at an assumed 4 hours per desktop a year, with 50% of it removed by pooled images, App Volumes and central policy. Both figures are assumptions, and the servers you run are not counted. Illustrative.
Loaded cost = salary + overheads per productive hour. Illustrative only — your TechBag quote models your actual environment and modules.
Quote only. Omnissa publishes no list price for Horizon 8 or any of its four Term editions, and no INR list. Each edition is licensed per concurrent user (CCU) or named user (NU) — Standard Term and Horizon for Linux are concurrent-only — and the servers, storage or cloud VMs underneath are a separate cost, with a vSphere Foundation for VDI entitlement included. Horizon Accelerator is an optional paid add-on. TechBag gets the quote itemised in INR with GST.

Take this into your next vendor call — including ours.
Will we pay per concurrent or per named user, and what peak concurrency does the quote assume? Get both priced in INR.
Do we need Linux desktops, RDSH apps or multi-cloud pools? Standard Term rules out all three, so confirm the edition fits.
Which platform hosts the desktops, and is it covered by the vSphere Foundation for VDI entitlement or licensed separately?
Does our edition need a connection to Omnissa’s cloud control plane to activate licences? SaaS editions do; ask about Term.
Are we on Horizon 8 2412 (8.14) or later? Older builds come only from the archive, and Horizon 7 is out of general support.
Where will Connection Server, gateway and session logs be kept, and for how long? CERT-In expects 180 days of logs.
Who patches agents, images and gateways each month? Price Horizon Accelerator against your own team’s time before signing.
Omnissa names no Indian Horizon customer; ask for a reference of similar size, ideally in your own sector, before you commit.
Count your concurrent and named users and the apps they need, or let a TechBag advisor match the Term edition, check host licensing and get the Horizon 8 quote itemised in INR.
